- Upādānakāraṇa:
- Of the four causes (catuṣkāraṇa), this is the material cause. For example, the material cause of a clay pot is clay. The original material cause being nature (prakṛti). See Kāraṇa.
- Upaniṣad:
- Secret doctrine, which reveals the hidden meaning of the Vedas.
- Upastha:
- See Jihvā/Upastha.
- Ut:
- Ascending. See below.
- Utsarpiṇī:
- The ascending arc, as opposed to the descending arc (avasarpiṇī). See Kālavāda.
- Uttara:
- Subsequent, following, later, as opposed to previous (pūrva).
