Chapter 1: Duḥkhādhyāyaḥ

“Suffering”

1.1

दुःखं ज्ञज्ञेयवियोगः ॥ १.१ ॥
duḥkhaṃ jñajñeyaviyogaḥ ‖ 1.1 ‖

duḥkham: suffering; jña-jñeya-viyogaḥ: of the knower + the known + separation

“Suffering is the separation of the knower and the known.”

1.2

दुःखोदयोऽस्मितारागद्वेषाभिनिवेशोदयः ॥ १.२ ॥
duḥkhodayo’smitārāgadveṣābhiniveśodayaḥ ‖ 1.2 ‖

duḥkha-udayaḥ: of suffering + arising; asmitā-rāgadveṣa-abhiniveśa-udayaḥ: of egotism + attachment and aversion + inertia + arising

“The arising of suffering is the arising of egotism, attachment and aversion, and inertia.”

1.3

एतदविद्यात्रयाशेषनिरोधो दुःखनिरोधः ॥ १.३ ॥
etadavidyātrayāśeṣanirodho duḥkhanirodhaḥ ‖ 1.3 ‖

etad-avidyā-traya-aśeṣa-nirodhaḥ: of this + ignorance + triple + complete + cessation; duḥkha-nirodhaḥ: of suffering + cessation

“The cessation of suffering is the complete cessation of this triple ignorance.”

निरोधमार्गो मुमुक्षुत्ववैराग्यविवेकाभ्यासः ॥ १.४ ॥
nirodhamārgo mumukṣutvavairāgyavivekābhyāsaḥ ‖ 1.4 ‖

nirodha-mārgaḥ: of cessation + path; mumukṣutva-vairāgya-viveka-abhyāsaḥ: seeking liberation + non-attachment + discernment + repetition

“The path of cessation is the repetition of seeking liberation, non-attachment, and discernment.”
