Sūtra 1.1

दुःखं वियोगो ज्ञाज्ञेययोः ॥ १.१ ॥
duḥkhaṃ viyogo jñājñeyayoḥ ‖ 1.1 ‖

duḥkham: suffering; viyogaḥ: separation; jñā-jñeyayoḥ: of the knower + the known

“Suffering is the separation of the knower and the known.”

Sūtra 1.2

उदयो दुःखस्यास्मितारागद्वेषाभिनिवेशाः ॥ १.२ ॥
udayo duḥkhasyāsmitārāgadveṣābhiniveśāḥ ‖ 1.2 ‖

udayaḥ: arising; duḥkhasya: of suffering; asmitā-rāgadveṣa-abhiniveśāḥ: egotism + attachment and aversion + inertia

“The arising of suffering is egotism, attachment and aversion, and inertia.”

Sūtra 1.3

निरोधो दुःखस्याशेषनिरोध एतस्या अविद्यात्रयायाः ॥ १.३ ॥
nirodho duḥkhasyāśeṣanirodha etasyā avidyātrayāyāḥ ‖ 1.3 ‖

nirodhaḥ: cessation; duḥkhasya: of suffering; aśeṣa-nirodhaḥ: complete + cessation; etasyāḥ: of this; avidyā-trayāyāḥ: of ignorance + triple

“The cessation of suffering is the complete cessation of this threefold ignorance.”

Sūtra 1.4

निरोधमार्गो दुःखस्याभ्यासो विवेकवैराग्यमुमुक्षुत्वानाम् ॥ १.४ ॥
nirodhamārgo duḥkhasyābhyāso vivekavairāgyamumukṣutvānām ‖ 1.4 ‖

nirodhamārgaḥ: path of cessation; duḥkhasya: of suffering; abhyāsaḥ: repetition; viveka-vairāgya-mumukṣutvānām: of discernment + non-attachment + seeking liberation

“The path of cessation of suffering is the repetition of discernment, non-attachment, and seeking liberation.”
