Śloka 10.1

श्रीभगवानुवाच
śrībhagavānuvāca
भूय एव महाबाहो
bhūya eva mahābāho
शृणु मे परमं वचः ।
śṛṇu me paramaṃ vacaḥ |
यत्तेऽहं प्रीयमाणाय
yatte’haṃ prīyamāṇāya
वक्ष्यामि हितकाम्यया ॥ १ ॥
vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā ‖ 1 ‖

The Blessed Lord said: “Once again, O Mighty-Armed, listen to my supreme instruction, which I will speak only for your benefit, dear one.”

Śloka 10.2

न मे विदुः सुरगणाः
na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ
प्रभवं न महर्षयः ।
prabhavaṃ na maharṣayaḥ |
अहमादिर्हि देवानां
ahamādirhi devānāṃ
महर्षीणां च सर्वशः ॥ २ ॥
maharṣīṇāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ‖ 2 ‖

na: neither; me: my; viduḥ: they know; suragaṇāḥ: hosts of gods; prabhavam: origin; na: nor; maharṣayaḥ: great sages; aham-ādiḥ-hi: I + origin + for; devānām: of the gods; maharṣīṇām: of the great sages; ca: and; sarvaśaḥ: in every respect

“Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know my origin, for I am their origin in every respect.”

Śloka 10.3

यो मामजमनादिं च
yo māmajamanādiṃ ca
वेत्ति लोकमहेश्वरम् ।
vetti lokamaheśvaram |
असम्मूढः स मर्त्येषु
asammūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu
सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥ ३ ॥
sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ‖ 3 ‖

yaḥ: he who; mām-ajam-anādim: me + unborn + beginningless; ca: and; vetti: he knows; loka-maheśvaram: world + Great Oversoul; asammūḍhaḥ: undeluded; saḥ: he; martyeṣu: among mortals; sarva-pāpaiḥ: by (from) all + sins; pramucyate: he is freed

“One who knows me as unborn, beginningless, and the Great Oversoul of all the worlds is undeluded among mortals and is freed from all sins.”

Śloka 10.4

बुद्धिर्ज्ञानमसम्मोहः
buddhirjñānamasammohaḥ
क्षमा सत्यं दमः शमः ।
kṣamā satyaṃ damaḥ śamaḥ |
सुखं दुःखं भवोऽभावो
sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ bhavo’bhāvo
भयं चाभयमेव च ॥ ४ ॥
bhayaṃ cābhayameva ca ‖ 4 ‖

buddhiḥ-jñānam-asammohaḥ: intelligence + knowledge + clarity; kṣamā: patience; satyam: truthfulness; damaḥ: self-restraint; śamaḥ: serenity; sukham: happiness; duḥkham: suffering; bhavaḥ-abhāvaḥ: birth + death; bhayam: fear; ca-abhayam-eva: and + fearlessness + certainly; ca: and

“Intelligence, knowledge, clarity, patience, truthfulness, self-restraint, serenity, happiness, suffering, birth, death, fear, fearlessness…”

Śloka 10.5

अहिंसा समता तुष्टिस्-
ahiṃsā samatā tuṣṭis-
तपो दानं यशोऽयशः ।
tapo dānaṃ yaśo’yaśaḥ |
भवन्ति भावा भूतानां
bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṃ
मत्त एव पृथग्विधाः ॥ ५ ॥
matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ ‖ 5 ‖

ahiṃsā: non-harming; samatā: impartiality; tuṣṭiḥ-tapaḥ: contentment + austerity; dānam: charity; yaśaḥ-ayaśaḥ: fame + infamy; bhavanti: they come; bhāvāḥ: characteristics; bhūtānām: of living beings; mattaḥ: from me; eva: alone; pṛthak-vidhāḥ: various + kinds

“…non-harming, impartiality, contentment, austerity, charity, fame, and infamy: these various characteristics of living beings come from me alone.”

Śloka 10.6

महर्षयः सप्त पूर्वे
maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve
चत्वारो मनवस्तथा ।
catvāro manavastathā |
मद्भावा मानसा जाता
madbhāvā mānasā jātā
येषां लोक इमाः प्रजाः ॥ ६ ॥
yeṣāṃ loka imāḥ prajāḥ ‖ 6 ‖

maharṣayaḥ: great sages; sapta: seven; pūrve: in the beginning; catvāraḥ: four [youths]; manavaḥ-tathāḥ: [fourteen] archetypal men + as well as; madbhāvāḥ: come from me; mānasāḥ: of mind; jātāḥ: born; yeṣām: from those who; loka: world; imāḥ: these; prajāḥ: people

“The four ancient [youths], the seven great sages, and the [fourteen] archetypal men come from me, born of my mind.  From them, all the people of this world were born.”

Śloka 10.7

एतां विभूतिं योगं च
etāṃ vibhūtiṃ yogaṃ ca
मम यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ।
mama yo vetti tattvataḥ |
सोऽविकम्पेन योगेन
so’vikampena yogena
युज्यते नात्र संशयः ॥ ७ ॥
yujyate nātra saṃśayaḥ ‖ 7 ‖

etām: this; vibhūtim: glory; yogam: power; ca: and; mama: mine; yaḥ: he who; vetti: he knows; tattvataḥ: truly; saḥ-avikampena: he + with unwavering; yogena: with [jñāna]-yoga; yujyate: he is endowed; na-atra: not + here; saṃśayaḥ: doubt

“One who truly knows this glory and power of mine is endowed with unwavering [jñāna]-yoga.  Of this there is no doubt.”

Śloka 10.8

अहं सर्वस्य प्रभवो
ahaṃ sarvasya prabhavo
मत्तः सर्वं प्रवर्तते ।
mattaḥ sarvaṃ pravartate |
इति मत्वा भजन्ते मां
iti matvā bhajante māṃ
बुधा भावसमन्विताः ॥ ८ ॥
budhā bhāvasamanvitāḥ ‖ 8 ‖

aham: I; sarvasya: of all; prabhavaḥ: origin; mattaḥ: from me; sarvam: everything; pravartate: it emanates; iti: thus; matvā: having known; bhajante: they worship; mām: me; budhāḥ: the intelligent; bhāvasamanvitāḥ: with all the heart

“I am the origin of all; everything emanates from me.  Having known this, the intelligent worship me with all their heart.”

Śloka 10.9

मच्चित्ता मद्गतप्राणा
maccittā madgataprāṇā
बोधयन्तः परस्परम् ।
bodhayantaḥ parasparam |
कथयन्तश्च मां नित्यं
kathayantaśca māṃ nityaṃ
तुष्यन्ति च रमन्ति च ॥ ९ ॥
tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca ‖ 9 ‖

maccittāḥ: having the mind fixed on me; mat-gata-prāṇāḥ: me + devoted to + lives; bodhayantaḥ: teaching; parasparam: mutually; kathayantaḥ-ca: talking + and; mām: me; nityam: constantly; tuṣyanti: they are satisfied; ca: and; ramanti: they are delighted; ca: and

“Those whose minds are fixed on me, who have devoted their lives to me, constantly teaching and talking to each other about me, are satisfied and delighted.”

Śloka 10.10

तेषां सततयुक्तानां
teṣāṃ satatayuktānāṃ
भजतां प्रीतिपूर्वकम् ।
bhajatāṃ prītipūrvakam |
ददामि बुद्धियोगं तं
dadāmi buddhiyogaṃ taṃ
येन मामुपयान्ति ते ॥ १० ॥
yena māmupayānti te ‖ 10 ‖

“To those constantly engaged in worshiping with devotion, I give buddhiyoga, by which they come to me.”

Śloka 10.11

तेषामेवानुकम्पार्थम्-
teṣāmevānukampārtham-
अहमज्ञानजं तमः ।
ahamajñānajaṃ tamaḥ |
नाशयाम्यात्मभावस्थो
nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho
ज्ञानदीपेन भास्वता ॥ ११ ॥
jñānadīpena bhāsvatā ‖ 11 ‖

teṣām-eva-anukampā-artham-aham-ajñāna-jam: for those + alone + compassion + for the sake of + I + ignorance + born of; tamaḥ: darkness; nāśayāmi-ātmabhāva-sthaḥ: I dispel + their hearts + situated in; jñāna-dīpena: knowledge + with the lamp; bhāsvatā: with shining

“For the sake of compassion alone I, who am situated in their hearts, dispel the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.”

Śloka 10.12

अर्जुन उवाच
arjuna uvāca
परं ब्रह्म परं धाम
paraṃ brahma paraṃ dhāma
पवित्रं परमं भवान् ।
pavitraṃ paramaṃ bhavān |
पुरुषं शाश्वतं दिव्यम्-
puruṣaṃ śāśvataṃ divyam-
आदिदेवमजं विभुम् ॥ १२ ॥
ādidevamajaṃ vibhum ‖ 12 ‖

Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme State, the Supreme Purifier, the Eternal Divine Being, the First God, the Unborn, and the Lord!”

Śloka 10.13

आहुस्त्वामृषयः सर्वे
āhustvāmṛṣayaḥ sarve
देवर्षिर्नारदस्तथा ।
devarṣirnāradastathā |
असितो देवलो व्यासः
asito devalo vyāsaḥ
स्वयं चैव ब्रवीषि मे ॥ १३ ॥
svayaṃ caiva bravīṣi me ‖ 13 ‖

āhuḥ-tvām-ṛṣayaḥ: they say + about you + sages; sarve: all; devarṣiḥ-nāradaḥ-tathā: divine sage + Nārada + as well; asitaḥ: Asita; devalaḥ: Devala; vyāsaḥ: Vyāsa; svayam: yourself; ca-eva: and + even; bravīṣi: you say; me: to me

“All the sages such as Asita, Devala, Vyāsa, and the divine sage Nārada say this about you.  And even you, yourself, now say the same to me.”

Śloka 10.14

सर्वमेतदृतं मन्ये
sarvametadṛtaṃ manye
यन्मां वदसि केशव ।
yanmāṃ vadasi keśava |
न हि ते भगवन्व्यक्तिं
na hi te bhagavanvyaktiṃ
विदुर्देवा न दानवाः ॥ १४ ॥
vidurdevā na dānavāḥ ‖ 14 ‖

sarvam-etat-ṛtam: everything + this + true; manye: I accept; yat-mām: which + me; vadasi: you tell; keśava: O Handsome-Haired; na: neither; hi: certainly; te: your; bhagavan-vyaktim: O Lord + true nature; viduḥ-devāḥ: they understand + gods; na: nor; dānavāḥ: Dānava demons

“I accept everything you tell me as true, O Handsome-Haired.  Neither the gods nor the Dānava demons understand your true nature, O Lord.”

Śloka 10.15

स्वयमेवात्मनात्मानं
svayamevātmanātmānaṃ
वेत्थ त्वं पुरुषोत्तम ।
vettha tvaṃ puruṣottama |
भूतभावन भूतेश
bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa
देवदेव जगत्पते ॥ १५ ॥
devadeva jagatpate ‖ 15 ‖

svayam-eva-ātmanā-ātmānam: yourself + alone + by yourself + you; vettha: you know; tvam: you; puruṣottama: O Supreme Spirit; bhūtabhāvana: O Creator of All Beings; bhūteśa: O Lord of All Beings; devadeva: O God of Gods; jagatpate: O Lord of the Universe

“You and you alone know yourself by yourself, O Supreme Spirit, O Creator of All Beings, O Lord of All Beings, O God of Gods, O Lord of the Universe.”

Śloka 10.16

वक्तुमर्हस्यशेषेण
vaktumarhasyaśeṣeṇa
दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः ।
divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ |
याभिर्विभूतिभिर्लोकान्-
yābhirvibhūtibhirlokān-
इमांस्त्वं व्याप्य तिष्ठसि ॥ १६ ॥
imāṃstvaṃ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi ‖ 16 ‖

vaktum-arhasi-aśeṣeṇa: to tell + you should + with (in) detail; divyāḥ: divine; hi-ātma-vibhūtayaḥ: certainly + your + glories; yābhiḥ-vibhūtibhiḥ-lokān-imāṃs-tvam: by which + by glories + worlds + these + you; vyāpya: having pervaded; tiṣṭhasi: you remain

“Please tell me in detail of your divine glories by which, having pervaded these worlds, you remain.”

Śloka 10.17

कथं विद्यामहं योगिंस्-
kathaṃ vidyāmahaṃ yogiṃs-
त्वां सदा परिचिन्तयन् ।
tvāṃ sadā paricintayan |
केषु केषु च भावेषु
keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu
चिन्त्योऽसि भगवन्मया ॥ १७ ॥
cintyo’si bhagavanmayā ‖ 17 ‖

katham: how; vidyām-aham: can I know + I; yogiṃs-tvām: O Yogī + you; sadā: constantly; paricintayan: meditate on; keṣu: in which; keṣu: in which; ca: and; bhāveṣu: in ways; cintyaḥ-asi: to be contemplated + you are; bhagavan-mayā: O Lord + by me

“How can I know you?  How can I constantly meditate on you, O Yogī?  And In which ways I am to contemplate you, O Lord?”

Śloka 10.18

विस्तरेणात्मनो योगं
vistareṇātmano yogaṃ
विभूतिं च जनार्दन ।
vibhūtiṃ ca janārdana |
भूयः कथय तृप्तिर्हि
bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptirhi
शृण्वतो नास्ति मेऽमृतम् ॥ १८ ॥
śṛṇvato nāsti me’mṛtam ‖ 18 ‖

vistareṇa-ātmanaḥ: with (in) detail + of your; yogam: powers; vibhūtim: glories; ca: and; janārdana: O Agitator of Men; bhūyaḥ: once again; kathaya: you should tell; tṛptiḥ-hi: satisfaction + for; śṛṇvataḥ: having heard; na-asti: not + there is; me-amṛtam: for me + nectar

“Once again, please tell me in detail of your powers and glories, O Agitator of Men, for having heard this nectar, I am still not satisfied.”

Śloka 10.19

श्रीभगवानुवाच
śrībhagavānuvāca
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi
दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः ।
divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ |
प्राधान्यतः कुरुश्रेष्ठ
prādhānyataḥ kuruśreṣṭha
नास्त्यन्तो विस्तरस्य मे ॥ १९ ॥
nāstyanto vistarasya me ‖ 19 ‖

The Blessed Lord said: “Yes, O Best of the Kurus, I will tell you of my principal divine glories, for there is no limit to my extent.”

Śloka 10.20

अहमात्मा गुडाकेश
ahamātmā guḍākeśa
सर्वभूताशयस्थितः ।
sarvabhūtāśayasthitaḥ |
अहमादिश्च मध्यं च
ahamādiśca madhyaṃ ca
भूतानामन्त एव च ॥ २० ॥
bhūtānāmanta eva ca ‖ 20 ‖

“I am the soul situated in the heart of all living beings, O Master of Sleep.  I am the beginning, the middle, and the end of all living beings.”

Śloka 10.21

आदित्यानामहं विष्णुर्-
ādityānāmahaṃ viṣṇur-
ज्योतिषां रविरंशुमान् ।
jyotiṣāṃ raviraṃśumān |
मरीचिर्मरुतामस्मि
marīcirmarutāmasmi
नक्षत्राणामहं शशी ॥ २१ ॥
nakṣatrāṇāmahaṃ śaśī ‖ 21 ‖

ādityānām-aham: among the Āditya gods + I; viṣṇuḥ-jyotiṣām: Viṣṇu + among lights; raviḥ-aṃśumān: sun + radiant; marīciḥ-marutām-asmi: Marīci + among the Marut gods + I am; nakṣatrāṇām-aham: among stars + I; śaśī: moon

“Among the Āditya gods, I am Viṣṇu.  Among lights, I am the radiant sun.  Among the Marut gods, I am Marīci.  Among stars, I am the moon.”

Śloka 10.22

वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि
vedānāṃ sāmavedo’smi
देवानामस्मि वासवः ।
devānāmasmi vāsavaḥ |
इन्द्रियाणां मनश्चास्मि
indriyāṇāṃ manaścāsmi
भूतानामस्मि चेतना ॥ २२ ॥
bhūtānāmasmi cetanā ‖ 22 ‖

vedānām: among the Vedas; sāmavedaḥ-asmi: Sāma Veda + I am; devānām-asmi: among the gods + I am; vāsavaḥ: Vāsava; indriyāṇām: among the senses; manaḥ-ca-asmi: mind + and + I am; bhūtānām-asmi: among living beings + I am; cetanā: intelligence

“Among the Vedas, I am the Sāma Veda.  Among the gods, I am Vāsava.  Among the senses, I am the mind.  Among living beings, I am intelligence.”

Śloka 10.23

रुद्राणां शङ्करश्चास्मि
rudrāṇāṃ śaṅkaraścāsmi
वित्तेशो यक्षरक्षसाम् ।
vitteśo yakṣarakṣasām |
वसूनां पावकश्चास्मि
vasūnāṃ pāvakaścāsmi
मेरुः शिखरिणामहम् ॥ २३ ॥
meruḥ śikhariṇāmaham ‖ 23 ‖

“Among the Rudra gods, I am Śaṅkara.  Among the Yakṣa and Rakṣasa demons, I am Vitteśa.  Among the Vasu gods, I am Pāvaka.  Among mountains, I am Meru.”

Śloka 10.24

पुरोधसां च मुख्यं मां
purodhasāṃ ca mukhyaṃ māṃ
विद्धि पार्थ बृहस्पतिम् ।
viddhi pārtha bṛhaspatim |
सेनानीनामहं स्कन्दः
senānīnāmahaṃ skandaḥ
सरसामस्मि सागरः ॥ २४ ॥
sarasāmasmi sāgaraḥ ‖ 24 ‖

purodhasām: among priests; ca: and; mukhyam: chief; mām: me; viddhi: you should know; pārtha: O Son of Pṛthā; bṛhaspatim: Bṛhaspati; senānīnām-aham: among generals + I; skandaḥ: Skanda; sarasām-asmi: among bodies of water + I am; sāgaraḥ: ocean

“Among priests, O Son of Pṛthā, know me to be the chief, Bṛhaspati.  Among generals, I am Skanda.  Among bodies of water, I am the ocean.”

Śloka 10.25

महर्षीणां भृगुरहं
maharṣīṇāṃ bhṛgurahaṃ
गिरामस्म्येकमक्षरम् ।
girāmasmyekamakṣaram |
यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽस्मि
yajñānāṃ japayajño’smi
स्थावराणां हिमालयः ॥ २५ ॥
sthāvarāṇāṃ himālayaḥ ‖ 25 ‖

maharṣīṇām: among great sages; bhṛguḥ-aham: Bhṛgu + I; girām-asmi-ekam-akṣaram: among words + I am + mono + syllable; yajñānām: among sacrifices; japayajñaḥ-asmi: muttered prayer + I am; sthāvarāṇām: among immovable objects; himālayaḥ: Himālayas

“Among the great sages, I am Bhṛgu.  Among words, I am the monosyllable [om].  Among sacrifices, I am muttered prayer.  Among immovable objects, I am the Himālayas.”

Śloka 10.26

अश्वत्थः सर्ववृक्षाणां
aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇāṃ
देवर्षीणां च नारदः ।
devarṣīṇāṃ ca nāradaḥ |
गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथः
gandharvāṇāṃ citrarathaḥ
सिद्धानां कपिलो मुनिः ॥ २६ ॥
siddhānāṃ kapilo muniḥ ‖ 26 ‖

aśvatthaḥ: Aśvattha; sarva-vṛkṣāṇām: among all + trees; devarṣīṇām: among the divine sages; ca: and; nāradaḥ: Nārada; gandharvāṇām: among the Gandharva gods; citrarathaḥ: Citraratha; siddhānām: among the masters; kapilaḥ: Kapila; muniḥ: sage

“Among all trees, I am the Aśvattha.  Among the divine sages, I am Nārada.  Among the Gandharva gods, I am Citraratha.  Among the masters, I am the sage Kapila.”

Śloka 10.27

उच्चैःश्रवसमश्वानां
uccaiḥśravasamaśvānāṃ
विद्धि माममृतोद्भवम् ।
viddhi māmamṛtodbhavam |
ऐरावतं गजेन्द्राणां
airāvataṃ gajendrāṇāṃ
नराणां च नराधिपम् ॥ २७ ॥
narāṇāṃ ca narādhipam ‖ 27 ‖

uccaiḥśravasam-aśvānām: Uccaiḥśravas + among horses; viddhi: you should know; mām-amṛtodbhavam: me + nectar-born; airāvatam: Airāvata; gajendrāṇām: among noble elephants; narāṇām: among men; ca: and; narādhipam: king

“Among horses, know me to be the nectar-born Uccaiḥśravas.  Among noble elephants, I am Airāvata.  Among men, I am king.”

Śloka 10.28

आयुधानामहं वज्रं
āyudhānāmahaṃ vajraṃ
धेनूनामस्मि कामधुक् ।
dhenūnāmasmi kāmadhuk |
प्रजनश्चास्मि कन्दर्पः
prajanaścāsmi kandarpaḥ
सर्पाणामस्मि वासुकिः ॥ २८ ॥
sarpāṇāmasmi vāsukiḥ ‖ 28 ‖

कीर्तिः श्रीर्वाक्च नारीणां
kīrtiḥ śrīrvākca nārīṇāṃ
स्मृतिर्मेधा धृतिः क्षमा ॥ ३४ ॥

ज्ञानं ज्ञानवतामहम् ॥ ३८ ॥

न तदस्ति विना यत्स्यान्-
na tadasti vinā yatsyān-
मया भूतं चराचरम् ॥ ३९ ॥
mayā bhūtaṃ carācaram ‖ 39 ‖

vibhūtīnāṃ parantapa |
एष तूद्देशतः प्रोक्तो
eṣa tūddeśataḥ prokto
विभूतेर्विस्तरो मया ॥ ४० ॥

तत्तदेवावगच्छ त्वं
tattadevāvagaccha tvaṃ
मम तेजोऽशसम्भवम् ॥ ४१ ॥

विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नम्-
viṣṭabhyāhamidaṃ kṛtsnam-
एकांशेन स्थितो जगत् ॥ ४२ ॥
ekāṃśena sthito jagat ‖ 42 ‖
