Śloka 7.1

श्रीभगवानुवाच
śrībhagavānuvāca
मय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ
mayyāsaktamanāḥ pārtha
योगं युञ्जन्मदाश्रयः ।
yogaṃ yuñjanmadāśrayaḥ |
असंशयं समग्रं मां
asaṃśayaṃ samagraṃ māṃ
यथा ज्ञास्यसि तच्छृणु ॥ १ ॥
yathā jñāsyasi tacchṛṇu ‖ 1 ‖

śrī-bhagavān-uvāca: The Blessed + Lord + he said; mayi-āsakta-manāḥ: to me + attached + mind; pārtha: O Son of Pṛthā; yogam: [jñāna]-yoga; yuñjan-mat-āśrayaḥ: practicing + me + taking refuge; asaṃśayam: without doubt; samagram: completely; mām: me; yathā: how; jñāsyasi: you will know; tat-śṛṇu: that + you should hear

The Blessed Lord said: “Now hear how by practicing [jñāna]-yoga with your mind devoted to me, and taking refuge in me, O Son of Pṛthā, you will know me completely, without doubt.”

Śloka 7.2

ज्ञानं तेऽहं सविज्ञानम्-
jñānaṃ te’haṃ savijñānam-
इदं वक्ष्याम्यशेषतः ।
idaṃ vakṣyāmyaśeṣataḥ |
यज्ज्ञात्वा नेह भूयोऽन्यज्-
yajjñātvā neha bhūyo’nyaj-
ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते ॥ २ ॥
jñātavyamavaśiṣyate ‖ 2 ‖

jñānam: knowledge; te-aham: to you + I; sa-vijñānam-idam: with + realization + this; vakṣyāmi-aśeṣataḥ: I will explain + fully; yat-jñātvā: which + having known; na-iha: not + in this subject; bhūyaḥ-anyat-jñātavyam-avaśiṣyate: more + anything else + to be known + it remains

“I will now fully explain to you this knowledge with realization, having known which, nothing more remains to be known in this subject.”

Śloka 7.3

मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु
manuṣyāṇāṃ sahasreṣu
कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये ।
kaścidyatati siddhaye |
यततामपि सिद्धानां
yatatāmapi siddhānāṃ
कश्चिन्मां वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ॥ ३ ॥
kaścinmāṃ vetti tattvataḥ ‖ 3 ‖

manuṣyāṇām: of people; sahasreṣu: among thousands; kaścit-yatati: someone + he strives; siddhaye: in (for) perfection; yatatām-api: among the striving + also; siddhānām: for perfection; kaścit-mām: someone + me; vetti: he knows; tattvataḥ: in truth

“Among thousands of people, one strives for perfection, and among thousands who strive, one knows me in truth.”

Śloka 7.4

भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः
bhūmirāpo’nalo vāyuḥ
खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च ।
khaṃ mano buddhireva ca |
अहङ्कार इतीयं मे
ahaṅkāra itīyaṃ me
भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ॥ ४ ॥
bhinnā prakṛtiraṣṭadhā ‖ 4 ‖

bhūmiḥ-āpaḥ-analaḥ: earth + water + fire; vāyuḥ: air; kham: ether; manaḥ: mind; buddhiḥ-eva: intellect + certainly; ca: and; ahaṅkāraḥ: ego; iti-iyam: thus + this; me: my; bhinnā: division; prakṛtiḥ-aṣṭadhā: nature + eightfold

“Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, ego, and intellect; this is the eightfold division of my nature.”

Śloka 7.5

अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां
apareyamitastvanyāṃ
प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् ।
prakṛtiṃ viddhi me parām |
जीवभूतां महाबाहो
jīvabhūtāṃ mahābāho
ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥ ५ ॥
yayedaṃ dhāryate jagat ‖ 5 ‖

aparā-iyam-itaḥ-tu-anyām: inferior + this + besides + but + another; prakṛtim: nature; viddhi: you should know; me: my; parām: superior; jīvabhūtām: ensouled; mahābāho: O Mighty-Armed; yaya-idam: by which + this; dhāryate: it is maintained; jagat: universe

“But this nature is inferior, O Mighty-Armed.  Know that there is another superior nature of mine by which this universe is ensouled and maintained.”

Śloka 7.6

एतद्योनीनि भूतानि
etadyonīni bhūtāni
सर्वाणीत्युपधारय ।
sarvāṇītyupadhāraya |
अहं कृत्स्नस्य जगतः
ahaṃ kṛtsnasya jagataḥ
प्रभवः प्रलयस्तथा ॥ ६ ॥
prabhavaḥ pralayastathā ‖ 6 ‖

etat-yonīni: this + wombs; bhūtāni: living beings; sarvāṇi-iti-upadhāraya: all + thus + you should know; aham: I; kṛtsnasya: of the whole; jagataḥ: universe; prabhavaḥ: origin; pralayaḥ-tathā: dissolution + as well

“Know that these two are the womb of all living beings.  Thus, I am the origin and dissolution of the whole universe.”

Śloka 7.7

मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्-
mattaḥ parataraṃ nānyat-
किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय ।
kiñcidasti dhanañjaya |
मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं
mayi sarvamidaṃ protaṃ
सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥ ७ ॥
sūtre maṇigaṇā iva ‖ 7 ‖

“Nothing superior to me exists, O Conqueror of Wealth.  Everything is strung on me like pearls on a thread.”

Śloka 7.8

रसोऽहमप्सु कौन्तेय
raso’hamapsu kaunteya
प्रभास्मि शशिसूर्ययोः ।
prabhāsmi śaśisūryayoḥ |
प्रणवः सर्ववेदेषु
praṇavaḥ sarvavedeṣu
शब्दः खे पौरुषं नृषु ॥ ८ ॥
śabdaḥ khe pauruṣaṃ nṛṣu ‖ 8 ‖

rasaḥ-aham-apsu: wetness + I + in water; kaunteya: O Son of Kuntī; prabhā-asmi: light + I am; śaśi-sūryayoḥ: of the moon + sun; praṇavaḥ: the syllable “om”; sarva-vedeṣu: in all + Vedas; śabdaḥ: sound; khe: in the ether; pauruṣam: virility; nṛṣu: in men

“I am the wetness of water, the light of the sun and the moon, the syllable ‘om’ in the Vedas, the sound in ether, and the virility in men, O Son of Kuntī.”

Śloka 7.9

पुण्यो गन्धः पृथिव्यां च
puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṃ ca
तेजश्चास्मि विभावसौ ।
tejaścāsmi vibhāvasau |
जीवनं सर्वभूतेषु
jīvanaṃ sarvabhūteṣu
तपश्चास्मि तपस्विषु ॥ ९ ॥
tapaścāsmi tapasviṣu ‖ 9 ‖

puṇyaḥ: sweet; gandhaḥ: fragrance; pṛthivyām: in earth; ca: and; tejaḥ-ca-asmi: brilliance + and + I am; vibhāvasau: in fire; jīvanam: life; sarvabhūteṣu: in all living beings; tapaḥ-ca-asmi: austerity + and + I am; tapasviṣu: in the austere

“I am the sweet fragrance of the earth, the brilliance in fire, the life in all living beings, and the austerity in the austere.”

Śloka 7.10

बीजं मां सर्वभूतानां
bījaṃ māṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ
विद्धि पार्थ सनातनम् ।
viddhi pārtha sanātanam |
बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतामस्मि
buddhirbuddhimatāmasmi
तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम् ॥ १० ॥
tejastejasvināmaham ‖ 10 ‖

bījam: seed; mām: me; sarvabhūtānām: of all living beings; viddhi: you should know; pārtha: O Son of Pṛthā; sanātanam: eternal; buddhiḥ-buddhimatām-asmi: intelligence + of the intelligent + I am; tejaḥ-tejasvinām-aham: splendor + in the splendid + I

“Know me to be the eternal seed of all living beings, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the splendor in the splendid, O Son of Pṛthā.”

Śloka 7.11

बलं बलवतां चाहं
balaṃ balavatāṃ cāhaṃ
कामरागविवर्जितम् ।
kāmarāgavivarjitam |
धर्माविरुद्धो भूतेषु
dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu
कामोऽस्मि भरतर्षभ ॥ ११ ॥
kāmo’smi bharatarṣabha ‖ 11 ‖

balam: strength; balavatām: of (in) the strong; ca-aham: and + I; kāma-rāga-vivarjitam: desire + attachment + devoid of; dharma-aviruddhaḥ: religion + not incompatible; bhūteṣu: in living beings; kāmaḥ-asmi: sexuality + I am; bharatarṣabha: O Best of the Bhāratas

“In the strong, I am strength devoid of desire and attachment.  In living beings, I am sexuality compatible with religion, O Best of the Bhāratas.”

Śloka 7.12

ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा
ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā
राजसास्तामसाश्च ये ।
rājasāstāmasāśca ye |
मत्त एवेति तान्विद्धि
matta eveti tānviddhi
न त्वहं तेषु ते मयि ॥ १२ ॥
na tvahaṃ teṣu te mayi ‖ 12 ‖

“Know that the mental, emotional, and physical states are of me alone.  They are in me, but I am not in them.”

Śloka 7.13

त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैर्-
tribhirguṇamayairbhāvair-
एभिः सर्वमिदं जगत् ।
ebhiḥ sarvamidaṃ jagat |
मोहितं नाभिजानाति
mohitaṃ nābhijānāti
मामेभ्यः परमव्ययम् ॥ १३ ॥
māmebhyaḥ paramavyayam ‖ 13 ‖

tribhiḥ-guṇamayaiḥ-bhāvaiḥ-ebhiḥ: by the three + consisting of the qualities + states + these; sarvam-idam: entire + this; jagat: universe; mohitam: deluded; na-abhijānāti: not + it knows; mām-ebhyaḥ: me + than these; param-avyayam: beyond + immutable

“Deluded by these states consisting of the three qualities, this entire universe does not know me as beyond these and immutable.”

Śloka 7.14

दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी
daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī
मम माया दुरत्यया ।
mama māyā duratyayā |
मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते
māmeva ye prapadyante
मायामेतां तरन्ति ते ॥ १४ ॥
māyāmetāṃ taranti te ‖ 14 ‖

daivī: divine; hi-eṣā: certainly + this; guṇamayī: consisting of the qualities; mama: of mine; māyā: power; duratyayā: difficult to overcome; mām-eva: me + certainly; ye: those who; prapadyante: they surrender to; māyām-etām: power + this; taranti: they overcome; te: they

“This divine power of mine consisting of the qualities is quite difficult to overcome.  Only those who surrender to me overcome it.”

Śloka 7.15

न मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढाः
na māṃ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ
प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमाः ।
prapadyante narādhamāḥ |
माययापहृतज्ञाना
māyayāpahṛtajñānā
आसुरं भावमाश्रिताः ॥ १५ ॥
āsuraṃ bhāvamāśritāḥ ‖ 15 ‖

na: not; mām: me; duṣkṛtinaḥ: sinners; mūḍhāḥ: foolish; prapadyante: they surrender to; nara-adhamāḥ: men + wicked; māyayā-apahṛta-jñānā: by power + carried away + knowledge; āsuram: demonic; bhāvam-āśritāḥ: nature + resorting to

“The sinners, the foolish, and the wicked who do not surrender unto me resort to the demoniac nature.  Their knowledge is carried away by this power.”

Śloka 7.16

चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां
caturvidhā bhajante māṃ
जनाः सुकृतिनोऽर्जुन ।
janāḥ sukṛtino’rjuna |
आर्तो जिज्ञासुरर्थार्थी
ārto jijñāsurarthārthī
ज्ञानी च भरतर्षभ ॥ १६ ॥
jñānī ca bharatarṣabha ‖ 16 ‖

caturvidhāḥ: four kinds; bhajante: they worship; mām: me; janāḥ: people; sukṛtinaḥ-arjuna: pious + O Arjuna; ārtaḥ: distressed; jijñāsuaḥ-arthārthī: inquisitive + seekers of wealth; jñānī: knowers; ca: and; bharatarṣabha: O Best of the Bhāratas

“Four types of pious people worship me, O Arjuna: the distressed, the seekers of wealth, the seekers of knowledge, and the knowers, O Best of the Bhāratas.”

Śloka 7.17

तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त
teṣāṃ jñānī nityayukta
एकभक्तिर्विशिष्यते ।
ekabhaktirviśiṣyate |
प्रियो हि ज्ञानिनोऽत्यर्थम्-
priyo hi jñānino’tyartham-
अहं स च मम प्रियः ॥ १७ ॥
ahaṃ sa ca mama priyaḥ ‖ 17 ‖

teṣām: of these; jñānī: knower; nitya-yukta: constantly + engaged; ekabhaktiḥ-viśiṣyate-priyaḥ: one-pointed devotion + he excels + dear; hi: for; jñāninaḥ-atyartham-aham: of (to) the knower + extremely + I; saḥ: he; ca: and; mama: (for) to me; priyaḥ: dear

“Of these, the knower who is constantly engaged in one-pointed devotion excels.  For I am extremely dear to them, and they to me.”

Śloka 7.18

उदाराः सर्व एवैते
udārāḥ sarva evaite
ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम् ।
jñānī tvātmaiva me matam |
आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा
āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā
मामेवानुत्तमां गतिम् ॥ १८ ॥
māmevānuttamāṃ gatim ‖ 18 ‖

udārāḥ: noble; sarva: all; eva-ete: indeed + these; jñānī: knower; tu-ātma-eva: but + myself + just; me: my; matam: opinion; āsthitaḥ: abiding; saḥ: he; hi: for; yuktātmā: wholly intent; mām-eva-anuttamām: me + alone + supreme; gatim: state

“They are all noble indeed.  But in my opinion, the knower is just like myself.  For they are wholly intent upon me alone and abide in the Supreme State.”

Śloka 7.19

बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते
bahūnāṃ janmanāmante
ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते ।
jñānavānmāṃ prapadyate |
वासुदेवः सर्वमिति
vāsudevaḥ sarvamiti
स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः ॥ १९ ॥
sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ ‖ 19 ‖

bahūnām: of many; janmanām-ante: of rebirths + after; jñānavān-mām: knower + me; prapadyate: he surrenders to; vāsudevaḥ: Son of Vasudeva; sarvam-iti: all + thus; saḥ: he; mahātmā: great soul; sudurlabhaḥ: very rare

“After many rebirths, the knower surrenders to me, thinking, ‘The Son of Vasudeva is all.’  Such a great soul is very rare.”

Śloka 7.20

कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञानाः
kāmaistaistairhṛtajñānāḥ
प्रपद्यन्तेऽन्यदेवताः ।
prapadyante’nyadevatāḥ |
तं तं नियममास्थाय
taṃ taṃ niyamamāsthāya
प्रकृत्या नियताः स्वया ॥ २० ॥
prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā ‖ 20 ‖

kāmaiḥ-taiḥ-taiḥ-hṛta-jñānāḥ: by desires + various + various + carried away + knowledge; prapadyante-anya-devatāḥ: they surrender to + other + deities; tam: that; tam: that; niyamam-āsthāya: rules + following; prakṛtyā: by nature; niyatāḥ: required; svayā: their

“Those whose knowledge has been carried away by various desires surrender to other deities, following whatever rules are required by their natures.”

Śloka 7.21

यो यो यां यां तनुं भक्तः
yo yo yāṃ yāṃ tanuṃ bhaktaḥ
श्रद्धयार्चितुमिच्छति ।
śraddhayārcitumicchati |
तस्य तस्याचलां श्रद्धां
tasya tasyācalāṃ śraddhāṃ
तामेव विदधाम्यहम् ॥ २१ ॥
tāmeva vidadhāmyaham ‖ 21 ‖

yaḥ: he who; yaḥ: he who; yām: whatever; yām: whatever; tanum: form; bhaktaḥ: devotee; śraddhayā-arcitum-icchati: with faith + to worship + he desires; tasya: for him; tasyā-acalām: for him + steady; śraddhām: faith; tām-eva: that + alone; vidadhāmi-aham: I grant + I

“Whatever form whatever devotee desires to faithfully worship, I grant them steady faith in that form alone.”

Śloka 7.22

स तया श्रद्धया युक्तस्-
sa tayā śraddhayā yuktas-
तस्याराधनमीहते ।
tasyārādhanamīhate |
लभते च ततः कामान्-
labhate ca tataḥ kāmān-
मयैव विहितान्हि तान् ॥ २२ ॥
mayaiva vihitānhi tān ‖ 22 ‖

“Endowed with that faith, they worship that form and try to obtain from it the objects of their desire, which are in fact bestowed by me.”

Śloka 7.23

अन्तवत्तु फलं तेषां
antavattu phalaṃ teṣāṃ
तद्भवत्यल्पमेधसाम् ।
tadbhavatyalpamedhasām |
देवान्देवयजो यान्ति
devāndevayajo yānti
मद्भक्ता यान्ति मामपि ॥ २३ ॥
madbhaktā yānti māmapi ‖ 23 ‖

antavat-tu: fleeting + but; phalam: fruit; teṣām: of those; tat-bhavati-alpa-medhasām: that + they are + less + intelligent; devān-devayajaḥ: gods + god-worshipers; yānti: they go; mat-bhaktā: my + devotees; yānti: they go; mām-api: me + also

“But for the less intelligent, that fruit is fleeting.  Those who worship the gods go to the gods; my devotees go to me.”

Śloka 7.24

अव्यक्तं व्यक्तिमापन्नं
avyaktaṃ vyaktimāpannaṃ
मन्यन्ते मामबुद्धयः ।
manyante māmabuddhayaḥ |
परं भावमजानन्तो
paraṃ bhāvamajānanto
ममाव्ययमनुत्तमम् ॥ २४ ॥
mamāvyayamanuttamam ‖ 24 ‖

avyaktam: unmanifest; vyaktim-āpannam: manifest + entered; manyante: they think; mām-abuddhayaḥ: me + less intelligent; param: supreme; bhāvam-ajānantaḥ: state + without realizing; mama-avyayam-anuttamam: my + immutable + incomparable

“The less intelligent think I was unmanifest but became manifest, without realizing my immutable, incomparable, Supreme State.”

Śloka 7.25

नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य
nāhaṃ prakāśaḥ sarvasya
योगमायासमावृतः ।
yogamāyāsamāvṛtaḥ |
मूढोऽयं नाभिजानाति
mūḍho’yaṃ nābhijānāti
लोको मामजमव्ययम् ॥ २५ ॥
loko māmajamavyayam ‖ 25 ‖

na-aham: not + I; prakāśaḥ: revealed; sarvasya: for (to) everyone; yogamāyā-samāvṛtaḥ: power of illusion + veiled; mūḍhaḥ-ayam: deluded + this; na-abhijānāti: not + it knows; lokaḥ: world; mām-ajam-avyayam: me + unborn + undying

“Veiled by the power of illusion, I am not revealed to everyone.  This deluded world does not know me as unborn and undying.”

Śloka 7.26

वेदाहं समतीतानि
vedāhaṃ samatītāni
वर्तमानानि चार्जुन ।
vartamānāni cārjuna |
भविष्याणि च भूतानि
bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni
मां तु वेद न कश्चन ॥ २६ ॥
māṃ tu veda na kaścana ‖ 26 ‖

veda-aham: I know + I; samatītāni: past; vartamānāni: present; ca-arjuna: and + O Arjuna; bhaviṣyāṇi: future; ca: and; bhūtāni: living beings; mām: me; tu: but; veda: he knows; na: not; kaścana: anyone

“I know the past, present, and future of all living beings, O Arjuna.  But no one knows me.”

Śloka 7.27

इच्छाद्वेषसमुत्थेन
icchādveṣasamutthena
द्वन्द्वमोहेन भारत ।
dvandvamohena bhārata |
सर्वभूतानि सम्मोहं
sarvabhūtāni sammohaṃ
सर्गे यान्ति परन्तप ॥ २७ ॥
sarge yānti parantapa ‖ 27 ‖

icchā-dveṣa-samutthena: attachment + aversion + by (from) arising; dvandva-mohena: pairs of opposites + deluded by; bhārata: O Descendant of Bharata; sarvabhūtāni: all living beings; sammoham: delusion; sarge: in (from) birth; yānti: they are subject to; parantapa: O Scorcher of Foes

“All living beings are subject to delusion from birth, O Descendant of Bharata, deluded by the pairs of opposites arising from attachment and aversion, O Scorcher of Foes.”

Śloka 7.28

येषां त्वन्तगतं पापं
yeṣāṃ tvantagataṃ pāpaṃ
जनानां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।
janānāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām |
ते द्वन्द्वमोहनिर्मुक्ता
te dvandvamohanirmuktā
भजन्ते मां दृढव्रताः ॥ २८ ॥
bhajante māṃ dṛḍhavratāḥ ‖ 28 ‖

yeṣām: for who; tu-antagatam: but + come to an end; pāpam: sins; janānām: for people; puṇyakarmaṇām: of good deeds; te: they; dvandva-moha-nirmuktāḥ: pairs of opposites + delusion + free from; bhajante: they worship; mām: me; dṛḍhavratāḥ: firm conviction

“But those people of good deeds whose sins have come to an end, and who are free from the delusion of the pairs of opposites, they worship me with firm conviction.”

Śloka 7.29

जरामरणमोक्षाय
jarāmaraṇamokṣāya
मामाश्रित्य यतन्ति ये ।
māmāśritya yatanti ye |
ते ब्रह्म तद्विदुः कृत्स्नम्-
te brahma tadviduḥ kṛtsnam-
अध्यात्मं कर्म चाखिलम् ॥ २९ ॥
adhyātmaṃ karma cākhilam ‖ 29 ‖

jarā-maraṇa-mokṣāya: old age + death + for release; mām-āśritya: me + takes refuge in; yatanti: they strive; ye: those who; te: they; brahma: Brahman; tat-viduḥ: that + they know; kṛtsnam-adhyātmam: all + individual self; karma: action; ca-akhilam: and + without a gap

“Whoever takes refuge in me, and strives for release from old age and death, they know all about Brahman, the individual self, and action, without a gap.”

साधिभूताधिदैवं मां
sādhibhūtādhidaivaṃ māṃ
साधियज्ञं च ये विदुः ।
sādhiyajñaṃ ca ye viduḥ |
प्रयाणकालेऽपि च मां
prayāṇakāle’pi ca māṃ
ते विदुर्युक्तचेतसः ॥ ३० ॥

“Whoever knows my relationship to the essence of matter, the Supreme Deity, and the Supreme Sacrifice, and who concentrates their mind on me, they know me even at the time of death.”
