Śloka 9.1
श्रीभगवानुवाच
śrībhagavānuvāca
इदं तु ते गुह्यतमं
idaṃ tu te guhyatamaṃ
प्रवक्ष्याम्यनसूयवे ।
pravakṣyāmyanasūyave |
ज्ञानं विज्ञानसहितं
jñānaṃ vijñānasahitaṃ
यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात् ॥ १ ॥
yajjñātvā mokṣyase’śubhāt ‖ 1 ‖

śrī-bhagavān-uvāca: The Blessed + Lord + he said; idam: this; tu: but; te: to you; guhya-tamam: secret + most; pravakṣyāmi-anasūyave: I will impart + for (because) not envious; jñānam: knowledge; vijñāna-sahitam: realization + along with; yat-jñātvā: which + having known; mokṣyase-aśubhāt: you will be freed + from misfortune
The Blessed Lord said: “Because you are not envious, I will impart this most secret knowledge along with realization to you, having known which, you will be freed from misfortune.”
Śloka 9.2
राजविद्या राजगुह्यं
rājavidyā rājaguhyaṃ
पवित्रमिदमुत्तमम् ।
pavitramidamuttamam |
प्रत्यक्षावगमं धर्म्यं
pratyakṣāvagamaṃ dharmyaṃ
सुसुखं कर्तुमव्ययम् ॥ २ ॥
susukhaṃ kartumavyayam ‖ 2 ‖

rājavidyā: royal science; rājaguhyam: royal secret; pavitram-idam-uttamam: purifying + this + most; pratyakṣa-avagamam: direct perception + learned; dharmyam: compatible with religion; susukham: very easy; kartum-avyayam: to practice + unchanging
“This royal science is the royal secret. It is the most purifying, compatible with religion, learned by direct perception, very easy to practice, and unchanging.”
Śloka 9.3
अश्रद्दधानाः पुरुषा
aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā
धर्मस्यास्य परन्तप ।
dharmasyāsya parantapa |
अप्राप्य मां निवर्तन्ते
aprāpya māṃ nivartante
मृत्युसंसारवर्त्मनि ॥ ३ ॥
mṛtyusaṃsāravartmani ‖ 3 ‖

aśraddadhānāḥ: having no faith; puruṣāḥ: people; dharmasya-asya: for (in) teaching + this; parantapa: O Scorcher of Foes; aprāpya: without having attained; mām: me; nivartante: they return; mṛtyu-saṃsāra-vartmani: death + transmigration + to the path
“People who have no faith in this teaching, O Scorcher of Foes, return to the path of transmigratory death without having attained me.”
Śloka 9.4
मया ततमिदं सर्वं
mayā tatamidaṃ sarvaṃ
जगदव्यक्तमूर्तिना ।
jagadavyaktamūrtinā |
मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि
matsthāni sarvabhūtāni
न चाहं तेष्ववस्थितः ॥ ४ ॥
na cāhaṃ teṣvavasthitaḥ ‖ 4 ‖

“This entire universe is pervaded by my unmanifest form. All living beings abide in me, but I do not abide in them.”
Śloka 9.5
न च मत्स्थानि भूतानि
na ca matsthāni bhūtāni
पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ।
paśya me yogamaiśvaram |
भूतभृन्न च भूतस्थो
bhūtabhṛnna ca bhūtastho
ममात्मा भूतभावनः ॥ ५ ॥
mamātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ ‖ 5 ‖

“Yet no beings abide in me. Behold my majestic power! Though I am the creator and sustainer of all living beings, I exist independently of them.”
Śloka 9.6
यथाकाशस्थितो नित्यं
yathākāśasthito nityaṃ
वायुः सर्वत्रगो महान् ।
vāyuḥ sarvatrago mahān |
तथा सर्वाणि भूतानि
tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni
मत्स्थानीत्युपधारय ॥ ६ ॥

yathā-ākāśa-sthitaḥ: just as + sky + abiding in; nityam: always; vāyuḥ: wind; sarvatragaḥ: all-pervading; mahān: mighty; tathā: so; sarvāṇi: all; bhūtāni: living beings; mat-sthāni-iti-upadhāraya: me + abiding in + thus + must be known
“Just as the all-pervading, mighty wind always abides in the sky, so it must be known that all living beings abide in me.”
Śloka 9.7
सर्वभूतानि कौन्तेय
sarvabhūtāni kaunteya
प्रकृतिं यान्ति मामिकाम् ।
prakṛtiṃ yānti māmikām |
कल्पक्षये पुनस्तानि
kalpakṣaye punastāni
कल्पादौ विसृजाम्यहम् ॥ ७ ॥
kalpādau visṛjāmyaham ‖ 7 ‖

Śloka 9.8
प्रकृतिं स्वामवष्टभ्य
prakṛtiṃ svāmavaṣṭabhya
विसृजामि पुनः पुनः ।
visṛjāmi punaḥ punaḥ |
भूतग्राममिमं कृत्स्नम्-
bhūtagrāmamimaṃ kṛtsnam-
अवशं प्रकृतेर्वशात् ॥ ८ ॥
avaśaṃ prakṛtervaśāt ‖ 8 ‖

“Having contracted my nature, I manifest this multitude of living beings again and again, all compelled by the force of nature.”
Śloka 9.9
न च मां तानि कर्माणि
na ca māṃ tāni karmāṇi
निबध्नन्ति धनञ्जय ।
nibadhnanti dhanañjaya |
उदासीनवदासीनम्-
udāsīnavadāsīnam-
असक्तं तेषु कर्मसु ॥ ९ ॥
asaktaṃ teṣu karmasu ‖ 9 ‖

“Yet those actions do not bind me, O Conqueror of Wealth. I remain neutral and unattached to them.”
Śloka 9.10
मयाध्यक्षेण प्रकृतिः
mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ
सूयते सचराचरम् ।
sūyate sacarācaram |
हेतुनानेन कौन्तेय
hetunānena kaunteya
जगद्विपरिवर्तते ॥ १० ॥
jagadviparivartate ‖ 10 ‖

“Under my supervision, nature manifests the animate and inanimate things, O Son of Kuntī. For this reason, the universe turns.”
Śloka 9.11
अवजानन्ति मां मूढा
avajānanti māṃ mūḍhā
मानुषीं तनुमाश्रितम् ।
mānuṣīṃ tanumāśritam |
परं भावमजानन्तो
paraṃ bhāvamajānanto
मम भूतमहेश्वरम् ॥ ११ ॥
mama bhūtamaheśvaram ‖ 11 ‖

avajānanti: they disregard; mām: me; mūḍhāḥ: foolish; mānuṣīm: human; tanum-āśritam: form + inhabiting; param: supreme; bhāvam-ajānantaḥ: status + ignorant of; mama: my; bhūta-maheśvaram: living beings + Great Oversoul
“The foolish disregard me inhabiting human form, ignorant of my supreme status as the Great Oversoul of all living beings.”
Śloka 9.12
मोघाशा मोघकर्माणो
moghāśā moghakarmāṇo
मोघज्ञाना विचेतसः ।
moghajñānā vicetasaḥ |
राक्षसीमासुरीं चैव
rākṣasīmāsurīṃ caiva
प्रकृतिं मोहिनीं श्रिताः ॥ १२ ॥
prakṛtiṃ mohinīṃ śritāḥ ‖ 12 ‖

moghāśāḥ: whose hopes are in vain; moghakarmāṇaḥ: whose actions are in vain; moghajñānāḥ: whose knowledge is in vain; vicetasaḥ: mindless; rākṣasīm-āsurīm: demonic + atheistic; ca-eva: and + merely; prakṛtim: nature; mohinīm: delusive; śritāḥ: taken refuge in
“Having taken refuge in the demonic, atheistic, delusive nature, they are mindless. Their knowledge, hopes, and actions are merely in vain.”
Śloka 9.13
महात्मानस्तु मां पार्थ
mahātmānastu māṃ pārtha
दैवीं प्रकृतिमाश्रिताः ।
daivīṃ prakṛtimāśritāḥ |
भजन्त्यनन्यमनसो
bhajantyananyamanaso
ज्ञात्वा भूतादिमव्ययम् ॥ १३ ॥
jñātvā bhūtādimavyayam ‖ 13 ‖

mahātmānaḥ-tu: great souls + but; mām: me; pārtha: O Son of Pṛthā; daivīm: divine; prakṛtim-āśritāḥ: nature + taken refuge in; bhajanti-ananya-manasaḥ: they worship + undeviating + mind; jñātvā: having known; bhūta-ādim-avyayam: being + origin + immutable
“But having known me as the immutable origin of being, and having taken refuge in the divine nature, O Son of Pṛthā, great souls worship me with an undeviating mind.”
Śloka 9.14
सततं कीर्तयन्तो मां
satataṃ kīrtayanto māṃ
यतन्तश्च दृढव्रताः ।
yatantaśca dṛḍhavratāḥ |
नमस्यन्तश्च मां भक्त्या
namasyantaśca māṃ bhaktyā
नित्ययुक्ता उपासते ॥ १४ ॥
nityayuktā upāsate ‖ 14 ‖

“Constantly praising me, striving with firm conviction, and bowing to me, they are continually engaged in devotional worship of me.”

ज्ञानयज्ञेन चाप्यन्ये
jñānayajñena cāpyanye
यजन्तो मामुपासते ।
yajanto māmupāsate |
एकत्वेन पृथक्त्वेन
ekatvena pṛthaktvena
बहुधा विश्वतोमुखम् ॥ १५ ॥
bahudhā viśvatomukham ‖ 15 ‖

अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञः
ahaṃ kraturahaṃ yajñaḥ
स्वधाहमहमौषधम् ।
svadhāhamahamauṣadham |
मन्त्रोऽहमहमेवाज्यम्-
mantro’hamahamevājyam-
अहमग्निरहं हुतम् ॥ १६ ॥
ahamagnirahaṃ hutam ‖ 16 ‖

पिताहमस्य जगतो
pitāhamasya jagato
माता धाता पितामहः ।
mātā dhātā pitāmahaḥ |
वेद्यं पवित्रम् ॐकार
vedyaṃ pavitram oṃkāra
ऋक् साम यजुरेव च ॥ १७ ॥

गतिर्भर्ता प्रभुः साक्षी
gatirbhartā prabhuḥ sākṣī
निवासः शरणं सुहृत् ।
nivāsaḥ śaraṇaṃ suhṛt |
प्रभवः प्रलयः स्थानं
prabhavaḥ pralayaḥ sthānaṃ
निधानं बीजमव्ययम् ॥ १८ ॥
nidhānaṃ bījamavyayam ‖ 18 ‖

तपाम्यहमहं वर्षं
tapāmyahamahaṃ varṣaṃ
निगृह्णाम्युत्सृजामि च ।
nigṛhṇāmyutsṛjāmi ca |
अमृतं चैव मृत्युश्च
amṛtaṃ caiva mṛtyuśca
सदसच्चाहमर्जुन ॥ १९ ॥
sadasaccāhamarjuna ‖ 19 ‖

त्रैविद्या मां सोमपाः पूतपापा
traividyā māṃ somapāḥ pūtapāpā
यज्ञैरिष्ट्वा स्वर्गतिं प्रार्थयन्ते ।
yajñairiṣṭvā svargatiṃ prārthayante |
ते पुण्यमासाद्य सुरेन्द्रलोकम्-
te puṇyamāsādya surendralokam-
अश्नन्ति दिव्यान्दिवि देवभोगान् ॥ २० ॥
aśnanti divyāndivi devabhogān ‖ 20 ‖

traividyāḥ: knowers of the three Vedas; mām: me; somapāḥ: drinkers of soma juice; pūtapāpāḥ: purified of sin; yajñaiḥ-iṣṭvā: through sacrifices + having worshipped; svargatim: way to heaven; prārthayante: they seek; te: they; puṇyam-āsādya: holy + having reached; surendra-lokam-aśnanti: Indra + realm + they enjoy; divyān-divi: heavenly + in heaven; devabhogān: pleasures of the gods
“The knowers of the three Vedas and drinkers of soma juice seek the way to heaven. Having worshiped me through sacrifices, they are purified of all sins. Having reached the holy realm of Indra, they enjoy the heavenly pleasures of the gods in heaven.”
Śloka 9.21
ते तं भुक्त्वा स्वर्गलोकं विशालं
te taṃ bhuktvā svargalokaṃ viśālaṃ
क्षीणे पुण्ये मर्त्यलोकं विशन्ति ।
kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti |
एवं त्रयीधर्ममनुप्रपन्ना
evaṃ trayīdharmamanuprapannā
गतागतं कामकामा लभन्ते ॥ २१ ॥
gatāgataṃ kāmakāmā labhante ‖ 21 ‖

te: they; tam: that; bhuktvā: having enjoyed; svargalokam: heavenly realm; viśālam: vast; kṣīṇe: when exhausted; puṇye: when merits; martyalokam: mortal realm; viśanti: they return; evam: merely; trayī-dharmam-anuprapannāḥ: of the three Vedas + teachings + following; gatāgatam: coming and going; kāmakāmāḥ: fulfilling desires; labhante: they gain
“Having enjoyed that vast heavenly realm, their merits exhausted, they return to the mortal realm. Following the teachings of the three Vedas merely to fulfill desires, they gain coming and going.”

अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां
ananyāścintayanto māṃ
ये जनाः पर्युपासते ।
ye janāḥ paryupāsate |
तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां
teṣāṃ nityābhiyuktānāṃ
योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम् ॥ २२ ॥
yogakṣemaṃ vahāmyaham ‖ 22 ‖

येऽप्यन्यदेवताभक्ता
ye’pyanyadevatābhaktā
यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः ।
yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ |
तेऽपि मामेव कौन्तेय
te’pi māmeva kaunteya
यजन्त्यविधिपूर्वकम् ॥ २३ ॥
yajantyavidhipūrvakam ‖ 23 ‖

अहं हि सर्वयज्ञानां
ahaṃ hi sarvayajñānāṃ
भोक्ता च प्रभुरेव च ।
bhoktā ca prabhureva ca |
न तु मामभिजानन्ति
na tu māmabhijānanti
तत्त्वेनातश्च्यवन्ति ते ॥ २४ ॥
tattvenātaścyavanti te ‖ 24 ‖

यान्ति देवव्रता देवान्-
yānti devavratā devān-
पितॄन्यान्ति पितृव्रताः ।
pitṝnyānti pitṛvratāḥ |
भूतानि यान्ति भूतेज्या
bhūtāni yānti bhūtejyā
यान्ति मद्याजिनोऽपि माम् ॥ २५ ॥
yānti madyājino’pi mām ‖ 25 ‖

Śloka 9.26
पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं
patraṃ puṣpaṃ phalaṃ toyaṃ
यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति ।
yo me bhaktyā prayacchati |
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतम्-
tadahaṃ bhaktyupahṛtam-
अश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः ॥ २६ ॥
aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ ‖ 26 ‖

patram: leaf; puṣpam: flower; phalam: fruit; toyam: water; yaḥ: he who; me: me; bhaktyā: with devotion; prayacchati: he offers to; tat-aham: that + I; bhakti-upahṛtam-aśnāmi: devotion + offered + I accept; prayatātmanaḥ: pure one
“Whatever pure one offers me a leaf, flower, fruit, or water with devotion, I accept that devotional offering.”
Śloka 9.27
यत्करोषि यदश्नासि
yatkaroṣi yadaśnāsi
यज्जुहोषि ददासि यत् ।
yajjuhoṣi dadāsi yat |
यत्तपस्यसि कौन्तेय
yattapasyasi kaunteya
तत्कुरुष्व मदर्पणम् ॥ २७ ॥
tatkuruṣva madarpaṇam ‖ 27 ‖

yat-karoṣi: whatever + you do; yat-aśnāsi: whatever + you eat; yat-juhoṣi: whatever + you sacrifice; dadāsi: you give; yat: whatever; yat-tapasyasi: whatever + austerity you perform; kaunteya: O Son of Kuntī; tat-kuruṣva: that + you should do; mat-arpaṇam: me + offering
“Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you sacrifice, whatever you give, whatever austerity you perform, O Son of Kuntī, do it as an offering to me.”
Śloka 9.28
शुभाशुभफलैरेवं
śubhāśubhaphalairevaṃ
मोक्ष्यसे कर्मबन्धनैः ।
mokṣyase karmabandhanaiḥ |
संन्यासयोगयुक्तात्मा
saṃnyāsayogayuktātmā
विमुक्तो मामुपैष्यसि ॥ २८ ॥
vimukto māmupaiṣyasi ‖ 28 ‖

śubhāśubha-phalaiḥ-evam: auspicious and inauspicious + fruit + thus; mokṣyase: you will be freed; karmabandhanaiḥ: by (from) the bondage of action; saṃnyāsa-yoga-yuktātmā: renunciation + Yoga + having dedicated yourself; vimuktaḥ: liberated; mām-upaiṣyasi: me + you will attain
“Having dedicated yourself to Yoga and renunciation thus, you will be freed from the bondage of action and its auspicious and inauspicious fruit. Being liberated, you will attain me.”
Śloka 9.29
समोऽहं सर्वभूतेषु
samo’haṃ sarvabhūteṣu
न मे द्वेष्योऽस्ति न प्रियः ।
na me dveṣyo’sti na priyaḥ |
ये भजन्ति तु मां भक्त्या
ye bhajanti tu māṃ bhaktyā
मयि ते तेषु चाप्यहम् ॥ २९ ॥
mayi te teṣu cāpyaham ‖ 29 ‖

“I am impartial to all living beings; they are neither liked nor disliked by me. But those who worship me with devotion are in me, and I am in them as well.”
Śloka 9.30
अपि चेत्सुदुराचारो
api cetsudurācāro
भजते मामनन्यभाक् ।
bhajate māmananyabhāk |
साधुरेव स मन्तव्यः
sādhureva sa mantavyaḥ
सम्यग्व्यवसितो हि सः ॥ ३० ॥
samyagvyavasito hi saḥ ‖ 30 ‖

“Even if the worst sinner worships me with exclusive devotion, they must still be considered righteous, for they have chosen correctly.”
Śloka 9.31
क्षिप्रं भवति धर्मात्मा
kṣipraṃ bhavati dharmātmā
शश्वच्छान्तिं निगच्छति ।
śaśvacchāntiṃ nigacchati |
कौन्तेय प्रतिजानीहि
kaunteya pratijānīhi
न मे भक्तः प्रणश्यति ॥ ३१ ॥
na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati ‖ 31 ‖

kṣipram: soon; bhavati: he becomes; dharmātmā: righteous; śaśvat-śāntim: lasting + peace; nigacchati: he attains; kaunteya: O Son of Kuntī; pratijānīhi: you should know; na: never; me: my; bhaktaḥ: devotee; praṇaśyati: he is lost
“They soon become righteous and attain lasting peace, O Son of Kuntī. You should know my devotee is never lost.”
Śloka 9.32
मां हि पार्थ व्यपाश्रित्य
māṃ hi pārtha vyapāśritya
येऽपि स्युः पापयोनयः ।
ye’pi syuḥ pāpayonayaḥ |
स्त्रियो वैश्यास्तथा शूद्रास्-
striyo vaiśyāstathā śūdrās-
तेऽपि यान्ति परां गतिम् ॥ ३२ ॥
te’pi yānti parāṃ gatim ‖ 32 ‖

mām: me; hi: for; pārtha: O Son of Pṛthā; vyapāśritya: having taken refuge in; ye-api: those who + though; syuḥ: they may be; pāpayonayaḥ: low birth; striyaḥ: women; vaiśyāḥ-tathā: merchants + as well; śūdrāḥ-te-api: servants + they + even; yānti: they attain; parām: Supreme; gatim: State
“For those who have taken refuge in me, though they may be of low birth, women, merchants, or servants, O Son of Pṛthā, even they attain the Supreme State.”
Śloka 9.33
किं पुनर्ब्राह्मणाः पुण्या
kiṃ punarbrāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā
भक्ता राजर्षयस्तथा ।
bhaktā rājarṣayastathā |
अनित्यमसुखं लोकम्-
anityamasukhaṃ lokam-
इमं प्राप्य भजस्व माम् ॥ ३३ ॥
imaṃ prāpya bhajasva mām ‖ 33 ‖

“How much more so for righteous priest and warrior devotees? Having come to this impermanent, unhappy world, you should worship me.”
Śloka 9.34
मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो
manmanā bhava madbhakto
मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु ।
madyājī māṃ namaskuru |
मामेवैष्यसि युक्त्वैवम्-
māmevaiṣyasi yuktvaivam-
आत्मानं मत्परायणः ॥ ३४ ॥
ātmānaṃ matparāyaṇaḥ ‖ 34 ‖
