Śloka 11.1
अर्जुन उवाच
arjuna uvāca
मदनुग्रहाय परमं
madanugrahāya paramaṃ
गुह्यमध्यात्मसंज्ञितम् ।
guhyamadhyātmasaṃjñitam |
यत्त्वयोक्तं वचस्तेन
yattvayoktaṃ vacastena
मोहोऽयं विगतो मम ॥ १ ॥

Śloka 11.2
भवाप्ययौ हि भूतानां
bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṃ
श्रुतौ विस्तरशो मया ।
śrutau vistaraśo mayā |
त्वत्तः कमलपत्राक्ष
tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa
माहात्म्यमपि चाव्ययम् ॥ २ ॥

“I have heard from you in detail, O Lotus-Eyed, about both the origin and dissolution of all living beings, and also your inexhaustible glory.”
Śloka 11.3
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वम्-
evametadyathāttha tvam-
आत्मानं परमेश्वर ।
ātmānaṃ parameśvara |
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपम्-
draṣṭumicchāmi te rūpam-
ऐश्वरं पुरुषोत्तम ॥ ३ ॥
aiśvaraṃ puruṣottama ‖ 3 ‖

evam-etat-yathā-āttha: thus + this + just as + you have described; tvam-ātmānam: you + yourself; parameśvara: O Supreme Oversoul; draṣṭum-icchāmi: to see + I wish; te: your; rūpam-aiśvaram: form + majestic; puruṣottama: O Supreme Spirit
“I wish to see your majestic form, O Supreme Oversoul, just as you yourself have described it me, O Supreme Spirit.”
Śloka 11.4
मन्यसे यदि तच्छक्यं
manyase yadi tacchakyaṃ
मया द्रष्टुमिति प्रभो ।
mayā draṣṭumiti prabho |
योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं
yogeśvara tato me tvaṃ
दर्शयात्मानमव्ययम् ॥ ४ ॥

“If you think that it is possible for me to see you in this way, O Lord, then please reveal your immutable self to me, O Lord of Yoga.”
Śloka 11.5
श्रीभगवानुवाच
śrībhagavānuvāca
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि
paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi
शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
śataśo’tha sahasraśaḥ |
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि
nānāvidhāni divyāni
नानावर्णाकृतीनि च ॥ ५ ॥

The Blessed Lord said: “Behold, O Son of Pṛthā, my many divine forms of various shapes and colors by the hundreds and thousands.”
Śloka 11.6
पश्यादित्यान्वसून्रुद्रान्-
paśyādityānvasūnrudrān-
अश्विनौ मरुतस्तथा ।
aśvinau marutastathā |
बहून्यदृष्टपूर्वाणि
bahūnyadṛṣṭapūrvāṇi
पश्याश्चर्याणि भारत ॥ ६ ॥
paśyāścaryāṇi bhārata ‖ 6 ‖

paśya-ādityān-vasūn-rudrān-aśvinau: you should behold + Āditya gods + Vasu gods + Rudra gods + Aśvin gods; marutaḥ-tathā: Marut gods + as well as; bahūni-adṛṣṭa-pūrvāṇi: many + unseen + before; paśya-āścaryāṇi: you should behold + wonders; bhārata: O Descendant of Bharata
“Behold the Āditya, Vasu, Rudra, Aśvin, and Marut gods, O Descendant of Bharata. Also, behold many wonders that have never been seen before.”
Śloka 11.7
इहैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं
ihaikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ
पश्याद्य सचराचरम् ।
paśyādya sacarācaram |
मम देहे गुडाकेश
mama dehe guḍākeśa
यच्चान्यद्द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥ ७ ॥
yaccānyaddraṣṭumicchasi ‖ 7 ‖

“Now behold the entire universe, both animate and inanimate, assembled here in my body, O Master of Sleep, and whatever else you wish to see.”
Śloka 11.8
न तु मां शक्यसे द्रष्टुम्-
na tu māṃ śakyase draṣṭum-
अनेनैव स्वचक्षुषा ।
anenaiva svacakṣuṣā |
दिव्यं ददामि ते चक्षुः
divyaṃ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ
पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ॥ ८ ॥
paśya me yogamaiśvaram ‖ 8 ‖

“But you cannot see me with your own eyes. So, I give you divine eyes. Behold my majestic power!”

सञ्जय उवाच
sañjaya uvāca
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्-
evamuktvā tato rājan-
महायोगेश्वरो हरिः ।
mahāyogeśvaro hariḥ |
दर्शयामास पार्थाय
darśayāmāsa pārthāya
परमं रूपमैश्वरम् ॥ ९ ॥
paramaṃ rūpamaiśvaram ‖ 9 ‖

Sañjaya said: “Having spoken thus, O King, then the Great Lord of Yoga, Hari, revealed to the Son of Pṛthā his supreme, majestic form…”

अनेकवक्त्रनयनम्-
anekavaktranayanam-
अनेकाद्भुतदर्शनम् ।
anekādbhutadarśanam |
अनेकदिव्याभरणं
anekadivyābharaṇaṃ
दिव्यानेकोद्यतायुधम् ॥ १० ॥

दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं
divyamālyāmbaradharaṃ
दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनम् ।
divyagandhānulepanam |
सर्वाश्चर्यमयं देवम्-
sarvāścaryamayaṃ devam-
अनन्तं विश्वतोमुखम् ॥ ११ ॥
anantaṃ viśvatomukham ‖ 11 ‖

divya-mālya-ambara-dharam: celestial + garlands + garments + wearing; divya-gandha-anulepanam: heavenly + fragrances + anointed with; sarvāścaryamayam-devam: containing all marvels + divine; anantam: unlimited; viśvatomukham: facing in every direction
“…wearing celestial garlands and garments, anointed with heavenly fragrances; containing all divine marvels, unlimited, and facing in every direction.”
Śloka 11.12
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य
divi sūryasahasrasya
भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता ।
bhavedyugapadutthitā |
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्-
yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syād-
भासस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥ १२ ॥
bhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ ‖ 12 ‖

“If a thousand suns were to rise at once in the sky, their light might be like the light of that Great Soul.”
Śloka 11.13
तत्रैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं
tatraikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ
प्रविभक्तमनेकधा ।
pravibhaktamanekadhā |
अपश्यद्देवदेवस्य
apaśyaddevadevasya
शरीरे पाण्डवस्तदा ॥ १३ ॥

“Then, the Son of Pāṇḍu could see the entire manifold universe assembled there in the body of the God of Gods.”
Śloka 11.14
ततः स विस्मयाविष्टो
tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo
हृष्टरोमा धनञ्जयः ।
hṛṣṭaromā dhanañjayaḥ |
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवं
praṇamya śirasā devaṃ
कृताञ्जलिरभाषत ॥ १४ ॥
kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata ‖ 14 ‖

पश्यामि देवांस्तव देव देहे

सर्वांस्तथा भूतविशेषसङ्घान् ।
sarvāṃstathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān |
ब्रह्माणमीशं कमलासनस्थम्-
brahmāṇamīśaṃ kamalāsanastham-
ऋषींश्च सर्वानुरगांश्च दिव्यान् ॥ १५ ॥
ṛṣīṃśca sarvānuragāṃśca divyān ‖ 15 ‖

Arjuna said: “I see assembled in your body, O Lord, all the gods and diverse living beings, such as Lord Brahmā seated on the lotus flower, as well as all the sages and divine Uraga serpents.”
Śloka 11.16
अनेकबाहूदरवक्त्रनेत्रं
anekabāhūdaravaktranetraṃ
पश्यामि त्वां सर्वतोऽनन्तरूपम् ।
paśyāmi tvāṃ sarvato’nantarūpam |
नान्तं न मध्यं न पुनस्तवादिं
nāntaṃ na madhyaṃ na punastavādiṃ
पश्यामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूप ॥ १६ ॥
paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa ‖ 16 ‖

“I see you with many arms, bellies, mouths, and eyes of innumerable shapes on all sides, O Lord of the Universe. I see no beginning, middle, or end to you, O Universal Form.”
Śloka 11.17
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रिणं च
kirīṭinaṃ gadinaṃ cakriṇaṃ ca
तेजोराशिं सर्वतो दीप्तिमन्तम् ।
tejorāśiṃ sarvato dīptimantam |
पश्यामि त्वां दुर्निरीक्ष्यं समन्ताद्-
paśyāmi tvāṃ durnirīkṣyaṃ samantād-
दीप्तानलार्कद्युतिमप्रमेयम् ॥ १७ ॥
dīptānalārkadyutimaprameyam ‖ 17 ‖

kirīṭinam: wearing a crown; gadinam: armed with a club; cakriṇam: bearing a discus; ca: and; tejorāśim: mass of splendor; sarvataḥ: on all sides; dīptimantam: shining; paśyāmi: I see; tvām: you; durnirīkṣyam: difficult to behold; samantāt-dīpta-anala-arka-dyutim-aprameyam: on all sides + blazing + fire + sun + radiance + immeasurable
“I see you wearing a crown, armed with a club, and bearing a discus, a shining mass of splendor on all sides, blazing everywhere like fire or the immeasurable radiance of the sun, difficult to behold.”
Śloka 11.18
त्वमक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यं
tvamakṣaraṃ paramaṃ veditavyaṃ
त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम् ।
tvamasya viśvasya paraṃ nidhānam |
त्वमव्ययः शाश्वतधर्मगोप्ता
tvamavyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā
सनातनस्त्वं पुरुषो मतो मे ॥ १८ ॥
sanātanastvaṃ puruṣo mato me ‖ 18 ‖

Śloka 11.19
अनादिमध्यान्तमनन्तवीर्यम्-
anādimadhyāntamanantavīryam-
अनन्तबाहुं शशिसूर्यनेत्रम् ।
anantabāhuṃ śaśisūryanetram |
पश्यामि त्वां दीप्तहुताशवक्त्रं
paśyāmi tvāṃ dīptahutāśavaktraṃ
स्वतेजसा विश्वमिदं तपन्तम् ॥ १९ ॥
svatejasā viśvamidaṃ tapantam ‖ 19 ‖

anādi-madhya-antam-ananta-vīryam-ananta-bāhum: without beginning + middle + end + infinite + power + countless + arms; śaśi-sūrya-netram: moon + sun + eyes; paśyāmi: I see; tvām: you; dīpta-hutāśa-vaktram: blazing + consuming offerings + mouths; sva-tejasā: by your + radiance; viśvam-idam: whole + this; tapantam: scorching
“I see countless arms of infinite power without beginning, middle, or end. The sun and the moon are your eyes. Your blazing mouths are consuming offerings. You are scorching this whole universe with your radiance.”
Śloka 11.20
द्यावापृथिव्योरिदमन्तरं हि
dyāvāpṛthivyoridamantaraṃ hi
व्याप्तं त्वयैकेन दिशश्च सर्वाः ।
vyāptaṃ tvayaikena diśaśca sarvāḥ |
दृष्ट्वाद्भुतं रूपमुग्रं तवेदं
dṛṣṭvādbhutaṃ rūpamugraṃ tavedaṃ
लोकत्रयं प्रव्यथितं महात्मन् ॥ २० ॥
lokatrayaṃ pravyathitaṃ mahātman ‖ 20 ‖

“The space between heaven and earth is pervaded in all directions by you alone. Having witnessed this extraordinary and terrible form of yours, O Great Soul, the three worlds are quite perturbed.”
Śloka 11.21
अमी हि त्वां सुरसङ्घा विशन्ति
amī hi tvāṃ surasaṅghā viśanti
केचिद्भीताः प्राञ्जलयो गृणन्ति ।
kecidbhītāḥ prāñjalayo gṛṇanti |
स्वस्तीत्युक्त्वा महर्षिसिद्धसङ्घाः
svastītyuktvā maharṣisiddhasaṅghāḥ
स्तुवन्ति त्वां स्तुतिभिः पुष्कलाभिः ॥ २१ ॥
stuvanti tvāṃ stutibhiḥ puṣkalābhiḥ ‖ 21 ‖

amī: these; hi: quite; tvām: you; surasaṅghāḥ: hosts of gods; viśanti: they enter; kecit-bhītāḥ: some + frightened; prāñjalayaḥ: palms joined together; gṛṇanti: they offer prayers; svasti-iti-uktvā: be well + thus + having shouted; maharṣi-siddha-saṅghāḥ: great sages + masters + hosts; stuvanti: they praise; tvām: you; stutibhiḥ: with prayers; puṣkalābhiḥ: with hymns
“These hosts of gods enter you. Some are quite frightened with palms joined together offering prayers. Having shouted, ‘Be well!’, hosts of masters and great sages praise you with many prayers and hymns.”
Śloka 11.22
रुद्रादित्या वसवो ये च साध्या
rudrādityā vasavo ye ca sādhyā
विश्वेऽश्विनौ मरुतश्चोष्मपाश्च ।
viśve’śvinau marutaścoṣmapāśca |
गन्धर्वयक्षासुरसिद्धसङ्घा
gandharvayakṣāsurasiddhasaṅghā
वीक्षन्ते त्वां विस्मिताश्चैव सर्वे ॥ २२ ॥
vīkṣante tvāṃ vismitāścaiva sarve ‖ 22 ‖

“The Rudra, Āditya, Vasu, Sādhya, Viśva, Aśvin, Marut, and Gandharva gods, the Uṣmapa ancestors, the Yakṣa demons, and hosts of demons and masters all behold you in wonder.”

रूपं महत्ते बहुवक्त्रनेत्रं
rūpaṃ mahatte bahuvaktranetraṃ
महाबाहो बहुबाहूरुपादम् ।
mahābāho bahubāhūrupādam |
बहूदरं बहुदंष्ट्राकरालं
bahūdaraṃ bahudaṃṣṭrākarālaṃ
दृष्ट्वा लोकाः प्रव्यथितास्तथाहम् ॥ २३ ॥
dṛṣṭvā lokāḥ pravyathitāstathāham ‖ 23 ‖

“Having beheld your great form, O Mighty-Armed, with its many mouths, eyes, arms, legs, feet, bellies, and terrible teeth, all the realms are perturbed, and so am I.”
Śloka 11.24
नभःस्पृशं दीप्तमनेकवर्णं
nabhaḥspṛśaṃ dīptamanekavarṇaṃ
व्यात्ताननं दीप्तविशालनेत्रम् ।
vyāttānanaṃ dīptaviśālanetram |
दृष्ट्वा हि त्वां प्रव्यथितान्तरात्मा
dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṃ pravyathitāntarātmā
धृतिं न विन्दामि शमं च विष्णो ॥ २४ ॥
dhṛtiṃ na vindāmi śamaṃ ca viṣṇo ‖ 24 ‖

“Having seen you touching the sky, with many colors, gaping mouths, and large, glowing eyes, O Viṣṇu, I am frightened to the core of my being, and I cannot regain my steadiness or equilibrium.”
Śloka 11.25
दंष्ट्राकरालानि च ते मुखानि
daṃṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni
दृष्ट्वैव कालानलसन्निभानि ।
dṛṣṭvaiva kālānalasannibhāni |
दिशो न जाने न लभे च शर्म
diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma
प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ॥ २५ ॥
prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa ‖ 25 ‖

The Blessed Lord said: “I am time, the great destroyer. I come forth to destroy everyone in the world. I have come forth in this battle to destroy all the soldiers stationed on opposing sides. None will survive, except for you.”

tasmāttvamuttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva
जित्वा शत्रून्भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यं समृद्धम् ।

मयैवैते निहताः पूर्वमेव

निमित्तमात्रं भव सव्यसाचिन् ॥ ३३ ॥

स्थाने हृषीकेश तव प्रकीर्त्या

रक्षांसि भीतानि दिशो द्रवन्ति
rakṣāṃsi bhītāni diśo dravanti
सर्वे नमस्यन्ति च सिद्धसङ्घाः ॥ ३६ ॥

विहारशय्यासनभोजनेषु ।

एकोऽथवाप्यच्युत तत्समक्षं
eko’thavāpyacyuta tatsamakṣaṃ
तत्क्षामये त्वामहमप्रमेयम् ॥ ४२ ॥

न त्वत्समोऽस्त्यभ्यधिकः कुतोऽन्यो
na tvatsamo’styabhyadhikaḥ kuto’nyo
लोकत्रयेऽप्यप्रतिमप्रभाव ॥ ४३ ॥

tasmātpraṇamya praṇidhāya kāyaṃ
प्रसादये त्वामहमीशमीड्यम् ।

पितेव पुत्रस्य सखेव सख्युः
piteva putrasya sakheva sakhyuḥ
प्रियः प्रियायार्हसि देव सोढुम् ॥ ४४ ॥

भयेन च प्रव्यथितं मनो मे ।

तदेव मे दर्शय देव रूपं
tadeva me darśaya deva rūpaṃ

तेनैव रूपेण चतुर्भुजेन

“I wish to see you wearing a crown, armed with a club, and bearing a discus, O Thousand-Armed. Please return to that four-armed form, O Universal Form.”

मया प्रसन्नेन तवार्जुनेदं
mayā prasannena tavārjunedaṃ
रूपं परं दर्शितमात्मयोगात् ।
rūpaṃ paraṃ darśitamātmayogāt |
तेजोमयं विश्वमनन्तमाद्यं
tejomayaṃ viśvamanantamādyaṃ
यन्मे त्वदन्येन न दृष्टपूर्वम् ॥ ४७ ॥

The Blessed Lord said: “By my own power, I have graciously shown you this supreme, brilliant, universal, infinite, and primordial form of mine, which has never been seen before by anyone other than you.”
Śloka 11.48
न वेदयज्ञाध्ययनैर्न दानैर्-
na vedayajñādhyayanairna dānair-
न च क्रियाभिर्न तपोभिरुग्रैः ।
na ca kriyābhirna tapobhirugraiḥ |
एवंरूपः शक्य अहं नृलोके
evaṃrūpaḥ śakya ahaṃ nṛloke
द्रष्टुं त्वदन्येन कुरुप्रवीर ॥ ४८ ॥
draṣṭuṃ tvadanyena kurupravīra ‖ 48 ‖

“Neither by performing Vedic sacrifices, nor by studying the Vedas, nor by charity, nor by rituals, nor by severe austerity is it possible to see me in this form in the world of men by any other than you, O Best of the Kurus.”
Śloka 11.49
मा ते व्यथा मा च विमूढभावो
mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvo
दृष्ट्वा रूपं घोरमीदृङ्ममेदम् ।
dṛṣṭvā rūpaṃ ghoramīdṛṅmamedam |
व्यपेतभीः प्रीतमनाः पुनस्त्वं
vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvaṃ
तदेव मे रूपमिदं प्रपश्य ॥ ४९ ॥
tadeva me rūpamidaṃ prapaśya ‖ 49 ‖

“Be not afraid nor confused having seen this frightful form of mine. Cast away your fears and gladden you heart having beheld just that form of mine.”

इत्यर्जुनं वासुदेवस्तथोक्त्वा
ityarjunaṃ vāsudevastathoktvā
स्वकं रूपं दर्शयामास भूयः ।
svakaṃ rūpaṃ darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ |
आश्वासयामास च भीतमेनं
āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītamenaṃ
भूत्वा पुनः सौम्यवपुर्महात्मा ॥ ५० ॥

दृष्ट्वेदं मानुषं रूपं
dṛṣṭvedaṃ mānuṣaṃ rūpaṃ
तव सौम्यं जनार्दन ।

इदानीमस्मि संवृत्तः
idānīmasmi saṃvṛttaḥ
सचेताः प्रकृतिं गतः ॥ ५१ ॥
sacetāḥ prakṛtiṃ gataḥ ‖ 51 ‖

Arjuna said: “Having seen this gentle human form of yours, O Agitator of Men, I am now composed and restored to my natural state of mind.”

सुदुर्दर्शमिदं रूपं
sudurdarśamidaṃ rūpaṃ
दृष्टवानसि यन्मम ।
dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama |
देवा अप्यस्य रूपस्य
devā apyasya rūpasya
नित्यं दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः ॥ ५२ ॥

The Blessed Lord said: “This form of mine which you have seen is very difficult to see. Even the gods are constantly wishing to see it.”
Śloka 11.53
नाहं वेदैर्न तपसा
nāhaṃ vedairna tapasā
न दानेन न चेज्यया ।
na dānena na cejyayā |
शक्य एवंविधो द्रष्टुं
śakya evaṃvidho draṣṭuṃ
दृष्टवानसि मां यथा ॥ ५३ ॥

भक्त्या त्वनन्यया शक्य
bhaktyā tvananyayā śakya
अहमेवंविधोऽर्जुन ।
ahamevaṃvidho’rjuna |
ज्ञातुं द्रष्टुं च तत्त्वेन
jñātuṃ draṣṭuṃ ca tattvena
प्रवेष्टुं च परन्तप ॥ ५४ ॥
praveṣṭuṃ ca parantapa ‖ 54 ‖

मत्कर्मकृन्मत्परमो
matkarmakṛnmatparamo
मद्भक्तः सङ्गवर्जितः ।
madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ |
निर्वैरः सर्वभूतेषु
nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu
यः स मामेति पाण्डव ॥ ५५ ॥
yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava ‖ 55 ‖

matkarmakṛt-matparamaḥ: working for me + considering me to be supreme; madbhaktaḥ: devoted to me; saṅgavarjitaḥ: free from attachment; nirvairaḥ: without enmity; sarvabhūteṣu: in (for) all living beings; yaḥ: he who; saḥ: he; mām-eti: me + he comes; pāṇḍava: O Son of Pāṇḍu
“One who works for me, who considers me to be supreme, who is devoted to me, who is free from attachment, and who is without enmity for all living beings, they come to me, O Son of Pāṇḍu.”
