Chapter 3: Sādhakādhyāyaḥ

“The Practioner”

3.1

साधकमार्गो वा ॥ ३.१ ॥
sādhakamārgo vā ‖ 3.1 ‖

sādhakamārgaḥ: adept path; vā: or

“Or the adept path can be taken.”

3.2

ईश्वरो विशेषसंयोगः क्लेशापरामृष्टः ॥ ३.२ ॥
īśvaro viśeṣasaṃyogaḥ kleśāparāmṛṣṭaḥ ‖ 3.2 ‖

īśvaraḥ: oversoul; viśeṣa-saṃyogaḥ: special + union; kleśa-aparāmṛṣṭaḥ: by afflictions + untouched

“The oversoul is a special union untouched by the afflictions.”

3.3

तत्र निरतिशयं सर्वज्ञसर्वशक्तिसर्वव्यापिबीजम् ॥ ३.३ ॥
tatra niratiśayaṃ sarvajñasarvaśaktisarvavyāpibījam ‖ 3.3 ‖

tatra: in it; niratiśayam: unsurpassed; sarvajña-sarvaśakti-sarvavyāpi-bījam: omniscience + omnipotence + omnipresence + seed

“In it is the unsurpassed seed of omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence.”

3.4

स आदिगुरुः कालेनानवच्छेदात् ॥ ३.४ ॥
sa ādiguruḥ kālenānavacchedāt ‖ 3.4 ‖

saḥ: it; ādiguruḥ: first teacher; kālena-anavacchedāt: due to time + undivided

“Undivided by time, it is the first teacher.”

3.5

तस्य वाचकः प्रणवः ॥ ३.५ ॥
tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ ‖ 3.5 ‖

tasya: of it; vācakaḥ: designation; praṇavaḥ: om

“Its designation is ‘om.’”

3.6

तज्जप्यं तदर्थभावनेन ॥ ३.६ ॥
tajjapyaṃ tadarthabhāvanena ‖ 3.6 ‖

tad-japyam: it + to be repeated; tad-artha-bhāvanena: of its + meaning + with contemplation

“It is to be repeated with contemplation of its meaning.”

3.7

ततोऽन्तरायाभावाः स्रोतापत्तौ ॥ ३.७ ॥
tato’ntarāyābhāvāḥ srotāpattau ‖ 3.7 ‖

tataḥ: from that; antarāya-abhāvāḥ: of obstacles + destruction; srotāpattau: to stream-entry

“From that comes the destruction of the obstacles to stream-entry.”

3.8

एवं शब्दस्रोतः संसारस्यापन्नम् ॥ ३.८ ॥
evaṃ śabdasrotaḥ saṃsārasyāpannam ‖ 3.8 ‖

evam: thus; śabda-srotaḥ: sound + current; saṃsārasya: of transmigration; āpannam: entered

“Thus, the sound-current of transmigration is entered.”

3.9

उदयः स्रोतसेतीत्यनुभवः ॥ ३.९ ॥
udayaḥ srotasetītyanubhavaḥ ‖ 3.9 ‖

udayaḥ: ascent; srotasā: through the stream; itīti-anubhavaḥ: of “this, that” + experience

“The ascent through the stream is the experience of ‘this, that.’”

3.10

समदृष्टिर् विनियुक्ता प्राकृतत्रये ॥ ३.१० ॥
samadṛṣṭir viniyuktā prākṛtatraye ‖ 3.10 ‖

samadṛṣṭiḥ: equal vision; viniyuktā: applied; prākṛta-traye: to the material + triad

“Equal vision is applied to the material triad.”

3.11

ततः संसारः क्रमापरान्तप्राप्तो निर्ग्राह्यश् च ॥ ३.११ ॥
tataḥ saṃsāraḥ kramāparāntaprāpto nirgrāhyaś ca ‖ 3.11 ‖

tataḥ: from that; saṃsāraḥ: transmigration; krama-aparānta-prāptaḥ: of succession + final end + reached; nirgrāhyaḥ: comprehensible; ca: and

“From that transmigration has reached the final end of succession and is comprehensible.”

3.12

सुषुप्त्यवस्था च बुद्धा ॥ ३.१२ ॥
suṣuptyavasthā ca buddhā ‖ 3.12 ‖

suṣupti-avasthā: deep sleep + state; ca: and; buddhā: awakened

“And the deep sleep state is awakened.”

3.13

एवं निःशब्दस्रोतो निर्वाणस्यापन्नम् ॥ ३.१३ ॥
evaṃ niḥśabdasroto nirvāṇasyāpannam ‖ 3.13 ‖

evam: thus; niḥśabda-srotaḥ: silent + current; nirvāṇasya: of cessation; āpannam: entered

“Thus, the silent current of cessation is entered.”

3.14

समदृष्टिर् विनियुक्ता प्रकृत्याम् ॥ ३.१४ ॥
samadṛṣṭir viniyuktā prakṛtyām ‖ 3.14 ‖

samadṛṣṭiḥ: equal vision; viniyuktā: applied; prakṛtyām: to nature

“Equal vision is applied to nature.”

3.15

एवं महासागरः कैवल्यस्यापन्नः ॥ ३.१५ ॥
evaṃ mahāsāgaraḥ kaivalyasyāpannaḥ ‖ 3.15 ‖

evam: thus; mahāsāgaraḥ: great ocean; kaivalyasya: of absolute unity; āpannaḥ: entered

“Thus, the great ocean of absolute unity is entered.”

3.16

तत् त्वम् असि ॥ ३.१६ ॥
tat tvam asi ‖ 3.16 ‖

tat: that; tvam: thou; asi: art

“Thou art that.”
