“Seventy Principles”

5.1

प्रत्येकं सप्तगुणस्य पुनरावर्तिमूलं दशतत्त्वस्य ॥ ५.१ ॥
pratyekaṃ saptaguṇasya punarāvartimūlaṃ daśatattvasya ‖ 5.1 ‖

“Each of the seven strings is the recursive origin of a tenfold principle.”

5.2

प्रत्येकं दशतत्त्वं त्रितत्त्वसप्ततत्त्वमयम् ॥ ५.२ ॥
pratyekaṃ daśatattvaṃ tritattvasaptatattvamayam ‖ 5.2 ‖

प्रत्येकं त्रितत्त्वं पौरुषकोशैश्वरयोगप्राकृतशरीरमयम् ॥ ५.३ ॥
pratyekaṃ tritattvaṃ pauruṣakośaiśvarayogaprākṛtaśarīramayam ‖ 5.3 ‖

त्रितत्त्वं सतः सन्मयकोशसमाधियोगकारणशरीराणि ॥ ५.४ ॥
tritattvaṃ sataḥ sanmayakośasamādhiyogakāraṇaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.4 ‖

त्रितत्त्वम् आनन्दस्यानन्दमयकोशध्यानयोगान्तःशरीराणि ॥ ५.५ ॥
tritattvam ānandasyānandamayakośadhyānayogāntaḥśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.5 ‖

त्रितत्त्वं चितश् चिन्मयकोशधारणायोगचित्तशरीराणि ॥ ५.६ ॥
tritattvaṃ citaś cinmayakośadhāraṇāyogacittaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.6 ‖

त्रितत्त्वं जीवस्य विज्ञानमयकोशबुद्धियोगाहंशरीराणि ॥ ५.७ ॥
tritattvaṃ jīvasya vijñānamayakośabuddhiyogāhaṃśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.7 ‖

tritattvam: threefold principle; jīvasya: of the soul; vijñānamayakośa-buddhiyoga-ahaṃśarīrāṇi: intellectual sheath + intellectual yoga + ego body

“The threefold principle of the soul is:

5.8

त्रितत्त्वं सत्त्वस्य मनोमयकोशज्ञानयोगनामशरीराणि ॥ ५.८ ॥
tritattvaṃ sattvasya manomayakośajñānayoganāmaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.8 ‖

tritattvam: threefold principle; sattvasya: of mind; manomayakośa-jñānayoga-nāmaśarīrāṇi: mental sheath + knowledge yoga + name body

“The threefold principle of mind is:

5.9

त्रितत्त्वं रजसः काममयकोशभक्तियोगलिङ्गशरीराणि ॥ ५.९ ॥
tritattvaṃ rajasaḥ kāmamayakośabhaktiyogaliṅgaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.9 ‖

tritattvam: threefold principle; rajasaḥ: of emotion; kāmamayakośa-bhaktiyoga-liṅgaśarīrāṇi: love sheath + devotion yoga + subtle body

“The threefold principle of emotion is:

5.10

त्रितत्त्वं तमसः प्राणमयकोशकर्मयोगस्थूलशरीराणि ॥ ५.१० ॥
tritattvaṃ tamasaḥ prāṇamayakośakarmayogasthūlaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.10 ‖

tritattvam: threefold principle; tamasaḥ: of physics; prāṇamayakośa-karmayoga-sthūlaśarīrāṇi: energy sheath + action yoga + gross body

“The threefold principle of physics is:

5.11

योगसप्तकं न साधनानि तु तत्त्वानि साध्यसाधनानि ॥ ५.११ ॥
yogasaptakaṃ na sādhanāni tu tattvāni sādhyasādhanāni ‖ 5.11 ‖

yoga-saptakam: seven + yogas; na: not; sādhanāni: practices; tu: but; tattvāni: principles; sādhya-sādhanāni: to be fulfilled + through practice

“The seven yogas are not practices but are principles to be fulfilled through practice.”

5.12

सप्ततत्त्वं सत्त्वस्य प्रथमद्वितीयश्रोत्रवाच्चक्षुःपादत्वक्पाणिजिह्वोपस्थघ्राणपायवः ॥ ५.१२ ॥
saptatattvaṃ sattvasya prathamadvitīyaśrotravāccakṣuḥpādatvakpāṇijihvopasthaghrāṇapāyavaḥ ‖ 5.12 ‖

saptatattvam: sevenfold principle; sattvasya: of mind; prathama-dvitīya-śrotravāc-cakṣuḥpāda-tvakpāṇi-jihvopastha-ghrāṇapāyavaḥ: first + second + hearing/speaking + seeing/moving + feeling/grasping + tasting/reproducing + smelling/eliminating

“The sevenfold principle of mind is:

5.13

सप्ततत्त्वं रजसः प्रथमद्वितीयशब्दरूपस्पर्शरसगन्धाः ॥ ५.१३ ॥
saptatattvaṃ rajasaḥ prathamadvitīyaśabdarūpasparśarasagandhāḥ ‖ 5.13 ‖

saptatattvam: sevenfold principle; rajasaḥ: of emotion; prathama-dvitīya-śabda-rūpa-sparśa-rasa-gandhāḥ: first + second + sound + appearance + feel + flavor + odor

“The sevenfold principle of emotion is:

5.14

सप्ततत्त्वं तमसः प्रथमद्वितीयाकाशाग्निवायुजलपृथिव्यः ॥ ५.१४ ॥
saptatattvaṃ tamasaḥ prathamadvitīyākāśāgnivāyujalapṛthivyaḥ ‖ 5.14 ‖

saptatattvam: sevenfold principle; tamasaḥ: of physics; prathama-dvitīya-ākāśa-agni-vāyu-jala-pṛthivyaḥ: first + second + ether + fire + air + water + earth

“The sevenfold principle of physics is:

5.15

सममितिप्रमा सांख्यावृत्तिः स्पन्दस्य ॥ ५.१५ ॥
samamitipramā sāṃkhyāvṛttiḥ spandasya ‖ 5.15 ‖

samamiti-pramā: of symmetry + basis; sāṃkhya-āvṛttiḥ: numerical + frequency; spandasya: of vibration

“The basis of symmetry is numerical frequency of vibration.”

5.16

सममितेर् अनुनादो यः संवेदनम् ॥ ५.१६ ॥
samamiter anunādo yaḥ saṃvedanam ‖ 5.16 ‖

samamiteḥ: from symmetry; anunādaḥ: resonance; yaḥ: which; saṃvedanam: information exchange

“From symmetry comes resonance, which is information exchange.”
