“Seventy Principles”

5.1

प्रत्येकं सप्तगुणस्य पुनरावर्तिन्मूलं दशतत्त्वस्य ॥ ५.१ ॥
pratyekaṃ saptaguṇasya punarāvartinmūlaṃ daśatattvasya ‖ 5.1 ‖

pratyekam: each; saptaguṇasya: of the seven strings; punarāvartin-mūlam: recursive + origin; daśatattvasya: of a tenfold principle

“Each of the seven strings is the recursive origin of a tenfold principle.”

5.2

प्रत्येकं दशतत्त्वं त्रितत्त्वसप्ततत्त्वयोः ॥ ५.२ ॥
pratyekaṃ daśatattvaṃ tritattvasaptatattvayoḥ ‖ 5.2 ‖

pratyekam: each; daśatattvam: tenfold principle; tritattva-saptatattvayoḥ: of a threefold principle + a sevenfold principle

“Each tenfold principle consists of a threefold principle and a sevenfold principle.”

5.3

प्रत्येकं त्रितत्त्वं पौरुषकोशप्राकृतशरीरे संयुक्त ऐश्वरयोगेन ॥ ५.३ ॥
pratyekaṃ tritattvaṃ pauruṣakośaprākṛtaśarīre saṃyukta aiśvarayogena ‖ 5.3 ‖

त्रितत्त्वं सत एकादिः सन्मयकोशसमाधियोगकारणशरीराणि ॥ ५.४ ॥
tritattvaṃ sata ekādiḥ sanmayakośasamādhiyogakāraṇaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.4 ‖

tritattvam: threefold principle; sataḥ: of existence; eka-ādiḥ: one + first; sanmayakosa-samādhiyoga-kāraṇaśarīrāṇi: existence sheath + absorption yoga + causal body

“The threefold principle of existence is:

1) the existence sheath
2) absorption yoga
3) the causal body”

त्रितत्त्वम् आनन्दस्यैकादिर् आनन्दमयकोशध्यानयोगान्तःशरीराणि ॥ ५.५ ॥
tritattvam ānandasyaikādir ānandamayakośadhyānayogāntaḥśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.5 ‖

त्रितत्त्वं चित एकादिश् चिन्मयकोशधारणायोगचित्तशरीराणि ॥ ५.६ ॥
tritattvaṃ cita ekādiś cinmayakośadhāraṇāyogacittaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.6 ‖

3) the conscious body”

त्रितत्त्वं जीवस्यैकादिर् विज्ञानमयकोशबुद्धियोगाहंशरीराणि ॥ ५.७ ॥
tritattvaṃ jīvasyaikādir vijñānamayakośabuddhiyogāhaṃśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.7 ‖

3) the ego body”

त्रितत्त्वं सत्त्वस्यैकादिर् मनोमयकोशज्ञानयोगनामशरीराणि ॥ ५.८ ॥
tritattvaṃ sattvasyaikādir manomayakośajñānayoganāmaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.8 ‖

त्रितत्त्वं रजस एकादिः काममयकोशभक्तियोगलिङ्गशरीराणि ॥ ५.९ ॥
tritattvaṃ rajasa ekādiḥ kāmamayakośabhaktiyogaliṅgaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.9 ‖

tritattvam: threefold principle; rajasaḥ: of emotion; eka-ādiḥ: one + first; kāmamayakośa-bhaktiyoga-liṅgaśarīrāṇi: love sheath + devotion yoga + subtle body

“The threefold principle of emotion is:

1) the love sheath
2) devotion yoga
3) the subtle body”

त्रितत्त्वं तमस एकादिः प्राणमयकोशकर्मयोगस्थूलशरीराणि ॥ ५.१० ॥
tritattvaṃ tamasa ekādiḥ prāṇamayakośakarmayogasthūlaśarīrāṇi ‖ 5.10 ‖

tritattvam: threefold principle; tamasaḥ: of physics; eka-ādiḥ: one + first; prāṇamayakośa-karmayoga-sthūlaśarīrāṇi: energy sheath + action yoga + gross body

“The threefold principle of physics is:

1) the energy sheath
2) action yoga
3) the gross body”

5.11

योगसप्तको न साधनानि तु तत्त्वनि साध्यसाधनानि ॥ ५.११ ॥
yogasaptako na sādhanāni tu tattvani sādhyasādhanāni ‖ 5.11 ‖

yoga-saptakaḥ: seven + yogas; na: not; sādhanāni: practices; tu: but; tattvani: principles; sādhya-sādhanāni: to be fulfilled + through practice

“The seven yogas are not practices but are principles to be fulfilled through practice.”

5.12

सप्ततत्त्वं सत्त्वस्य चतुरादिर् अनाम्न्यनाम्नीश्रोत्रवाचौचक्षुःपादौत्वक्पाणीजिह्वोपस्थौघ्राणपायवः ॥ ५.१२ ॥
saptatattvaṃ sattvasya caturādir anāmnyanāmnīśrotravācaucakṣuḥpādautvakpāṇījihvopasthaughrāṇapāyavaḥ ‖ 5.12 ‖

saptatattvam: sevenfold principle; sattvasya: of mind; catur-ādiḥ: four + first; anāmnī-anāmnī-śrotravācau-cakṣuḥpādau-tvakpāṇī-jihvopasthau-ghrāṇapāyavaḥ: unnamed/unnamed + unnamed/unnamed + hearing/speaking + seeing/moving + feeling/grasping + tasting/reproducing + smelling/eliminating

“The sevenfold principle of mind is:

4) unnamed/unnamed
5) unnamed/unnamed
6) hearing/speaking
7) seeing/moving
8) feeling/grasping
9) tasting/reproducing
10) smelling/eliminating”

सप्ततत्त्वं रजसश् चतुरादिर् अनामानामशब्दरूपस्पर्शरसगन्धाः ॥ ५.१३ ॥
saptatattvaṃ rajasaś caturādir anāmānāmaśabdarūpasparśarasagandhāḥ ‖ 5.13 ‖

saptatattvam: sevenfold principle; rajasaḥ: of emotion; catur-ādiḥ: four + first; anāma-anāma-sabda-rūpa-sparśa-rasa-gandhāḥ: unnamed + unnamed + sound + appearance + feel + flavor + odor

“The sevenfold principle of emotion is:

4) unnamed
5) unnamed
6) sound
7) appearance
8) texture
9) flavor
10) odor”

सप्ततत्त्वं तमसश् चतुरादिर् अनामानामाकाशाग्निवायुजलपृथ्व्यः ॥ ५.१४ ॥
saptatattvaṃ tamasaś caturādir anāmānāmākāśāgnivāyujalapṛthvyaḥ ‖ 5.14 ‖

saptatattvam: sevenfold principle; tamasaḥ: of physics; catur-ādiḥ: four + first; anāma-anāma-ākāśa-agni-vāyu-jala-pṛthvyaḥ: unamed + unamed + ether + fire + air + water + earth

“The sevenfold principle of physics is:

5) unnamed
6) ether
7) fire
8) air
9) water
10) earth”

5.15

प्रमा सममितेः सांख्यावृत्तिः स्पन्दस्य ॥ ५.१५ ॥
pramā samamiteḥ sāṃkhyāvṛttiḥ spandasya ‖ 5.15 ‖

pramā: basis; samamiteḥ: of symmetry; sāṃkhya-āvṛttiḥ: numerical + frequency; spandasya: of vibration

“The basis of symmetry is numerical frequency of vibration.”

5.16

सममितेर् अनुनादो यत् संवेदनम् ॥ ५.१६ ॥
samamiter anunādo yat saṃvedanam ‖ 5.16 ‖

samamiteḥ: from symmetry; anunādaḥ: resonance; yat: which; saṃvedanam: information exchange

“From symmetry comes resonance, which is information exchange.”
